How can one surrender a 10-year old dog? I hope that some kind hearted person adopts him quickly. These are the victims that suffer the most and desperately need loving homes.

Unless that owner died or became too ill to care for Petie then karma will surely come and bit them in the a** .

It is truly heartbreaking when an elder dog is turned in to a shelter. I was shocked when a coworker turned in their 9 year old dog but they insisted they had no choice but to do so because they couldn't find a rental where they wanted that would accept the dog. And when I asked if they couldn't find a friend or a relative instead, they said they didn't know anyone that could take him in.

I consider my pets to be family and I don't think I could do this under any circumstances but sometimes life is tough and calls for difficult decisons.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding Petie, he is a special dog that needs a special person and I hope one will come forward soon.

He seems like quite a character!

What must it be like for that poor dog who knows what it's like to have a home and family to now has to adjust to life in a shelter environment! Truly heart breaking! When a pet gives you the joy of his companionship and love in his early years, how can you not care for him in his latter years? And if you have children in the home, what message are you giving them when you surrender an older pet?

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
