What to do this weekend? Dogfest!

If you're not running in the Baltimore Marathon on Saturday, and you're an animal lover, you really have just one place to be: Dogfest.

It just sounds like such a cool event -- and a big one that raises money for the Baltimore Humane Society.

First off, despite it's name, it's not just about dogs. Sure, there will be TONS of stuff for dogs, but there will also be cats to see and even horses. For the dogs, there will be contests (like for the Best Kisser! and the Best Costume judged by First Lady Katie O'Malley --who I hear is bringing one of the O'Malley family dogs, Rex.), swimming pools and games. For the pet lovers, there will be plenty of vendors, exhibits and demonstrations.

The gates at Shawan Downs in Hunt Valley open at 10 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. Dogs are welcome, but not on retractable leashes.

Teddy Bean will be there!

Although petless, I'm going to try to be there. Great cause. And sounds like a lot of fun.

Ah, if only Bo could be there, too...

So, just wondering, will Teddy Bean be easy to spot? I'd love to meet him. Will he be at The Sun's booth for a while?

He'll be black and furry like a little woolly lamb-pup. And yep, he'll be at the Sun booth a bit!

Dogfest was bigger than I expected. Nice property to have it at. They really had a lot of interesting vendors, though it was a bit depressing that there is a place in the world for that many rescue organizations. Baby and I did not make it in time for the Best Kisser contest, and I'm pretty sure she could not have won Smallest Dog this time with all the MinPin, Yorkies, Maltese, and Chihuahuas there. Bought a little sign that says, A Girl's Best Friend is Her Dog.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
