UPDATE: Burned kitty healed, living the good life

It looks like a story that started horribly for one Baltimore kitty is getting a happy ever after ending.

Gabrielle, the kitten that was tortured and burned in West Baltimore in August, has almost completely healed and been adopted by a loving owner who not only is a vet tech, but has a home filled with other kitties for Gabby to play with.

Karen Reese from Recycled Love, the organization that took care of Gabby's medical expenses, says the kitten is living with Rob, a veterinarian technician and behaviorist at Route 140 Veterinary Hospital. He says that 90 percent of the kitty's fur has grown back and expects the rest to come in in the next few weeks.

He's keeping an eye on her recovery and has introduced her to her new best friends -- her feline brothers are Spanky, Biscuit and Jolly Roger.

"In less than a week all three of her new brothers couldn’t wait for her to come outside of the bedroom so they could officially meet her," Reese says. "They knew she had special privileges of sleeping with their guardian and couldn’t wait to meet this 'special lady.'"

She says the moment they all met, it wasn't just that the cats all got along -- it was love at first sight.

Gabby also has been quite interested in her new tortoise friends, Athena and Akasha.

"This little survivor deserves the privileged life she has been given," Reese says. "She is an absolute success story with all of her guardian angels watching over her…rom the lady that called animal control, to BARCS, to the public that generously donated for her care, to Recycled Love and now to Rob and his veterinarian team."

We couldn't agree more....Good luck little kitty!

What a great end to this story. God bless all the good people involved and my best wishes for a wonderful life, little feline lady.

This is a sweet story. Glad you are getting better, Gabby!

So glad to hear about this success story. Hope the villains get what they deserve. No animal should be harmed like Gabby was.

I am so glad she is doing okay! Thanks for the update, I started wondering about her again. And especially thanks to Karen Reese for taking care of her expenses. That is so generous!

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
