The best dog breeds for allergy sufferers

The website Cleanhomeideas.com would like to remind folks that even though 15 percent of the population suffers from allergies, the sniffles and sneezing don't necessarily have to prevent anyone from having a dog.
They (and the American Kennel Club) say these are the best breeds for allergy sufferers:
Basenji
Bedlington Terrier
Bichon Frise
Cairn Terrier
Chinese Crested
Coton de Tulear
Fox Terrier
Havanese
Irish Water Spaniel
Kerry Blue Terrier
Maltese
Poodle (any size) -- like Teddy Bean!
Portuguese Water Dog -- like Bo Obama!
Schnauzer
Shih Tzu
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Yorkshire Terrier
The site also recommends the allergy-prone shampoo their dog weekly, feed the dog a coat supplement to reduce shedding and circulate oil in the dog's skin and use HEPA filters.

My wife and I got a Havanese shortly after we got married this year, and it is a great dog. I would often get the sneezes when around her parents' cats and sometimes around my parents' golden retrievers. I haven't had a single sneeze from being around Monte, even though he sleeps in the bed with us.

Basenjis may be a good dog for allergy sufferers, but I do not recomend this breed for someone who cannot spend much time with this breed. Basenjis are very high energy and need an outlet, such as running each and every day, otherwise you will have destructive behavior problems. There are too many now in rescue.

I have 2 chinese cresteds and they are great, although a little stubborn. I developed dog and cat allergies about 6 years ago after years of owning both. I fell into owning my first crested and had to get him a buddy this past year! Except for the fact they are both somewhat stubborn, they are polar opposites. But I love 'em! And how can you beat no allergies and no dog hair to clean up!

This is great information regarding allergies to dogs. I would like to put a link to this information on my Hub. I am a little amazed the Shih Tzu made the list. Who would have thought?
