Does the dog need a sweater?

Brrr. It's cold today. Walking Teddy Bean this morning I wore mittens. But he was nude, harness aside.
Does The Bean need a sweater? Maybe a little coat?
Yes, he has built-in fleece, sort of, but is that enough? Since I bought the Halloween costume a few weeks ago, I feel like I've opened the door to potentially slide down the slippery slope of dog wardrobe-ism. I have to say, considering I was utterly against the dog clothes concept until recently, I've since run into many quite reasonable people who say they put their dogs in things to keep them warm.
And I'm not just talking small dogs! And I'm not just talking women! I ran into a man at the park a day ago with a quite stately Weimaraner and he said with its flat coat, the dog likes to slip on a sweatshirt when the temperature dips. He said the dog gets all excited when he sees the sweatshirt because that means walk time.
So what do you think? Who's down with the sweater or coat concept? Who not so much?
I think there will be some prizes in this one, depending on how responses go.....

My 85-lb male pitbull Moby wears a coat/sweater Fall-Spring. The poor dog has the thinnest coat I've ever seen and very thin, delicate skin. He starts shivering if it is 60 degrees outside. I have 2 other dogs, but Moby is the only one that needs clothes.
The odd thing is that Moby prefers to wear pink. He has an array of clothes in a basket next to his toys, and when we tell him to "get dressed" he always picks out his pink polo shirt or his pink plaid coat.
Nothing looks crazier than a person walking their pit bull in a pink girly coat.

I have a winter coat for my mini schnauzer, Peanut. When it's really cold outside, he actually likes wearing it. The coat is pretty cute though, it looks like a bomber jacket!

Lucy the 75-lb pit bull has an L.L. Bean coat, oh yes she does. Pit bulls' coats are too thin to keep them warm: they don't have that undercoat like shaggier breeds do. We tried coats from PetSmart, but she pulled them off and shredded them. So now the coat is reserved for walks. When she runs around in the backyard, we keep an eye on her so she doesn't stay out too long and get chilled.

I'm not a fan of pet wardrobes.
Having said that, I've knit each of the dogs in my life a sturdy wool sweater.
When the sun goes down and my dad and his dog, Molly, are at the boat, she nudges him until he puts the sweater on her. Then she's comfortable until it's time to leave.
My 13-year-old pup, Bric, wears his wool sweater when it rains. He hates the rain. The wool not only keeps the moisture off of him, but it keeps him wool even when it's drenched.
I've just started a wool sweater for my newest little guy--a 6-pound poodle.
Seems to me that a traditional handmade wool sweater is sensible winter wear, even for those of us who abhor doggie wardrobes.

We have a 90 lb golden retriever. He wears a football jersey on Sundays. My football jersey because the so called "XL" size for most dog clothes stopped fitting when he was 6 months. He couldn't be happier. But, I am pretty sure he wouldn't freeze without it.

My two little min-pins absolutely need coats/sweaters in the fall/winter/spring. They get cold easily. They have sweaters as well as winter coats.
We got a coat for our lab mix that we will use in cold weather.

I'm not sure about crossing the line into sweater buying, but you can be on the looking for Maisy Snuggie pictures now that it's colder.

I'll put a jacket on my dog only when it's truly cold... like single digit cold. Even then, she's not happy about it. I think most dogs have no problem prancing around in the elements.
If anything, it's their paws that get cold from the ice and snow.

I think it's totally fine to put dogs in clothes! Tig, my adorable Min Pin, wore his black sweater with houndstooth collar today. He actually likes dressing up. Tig hates the rain, so if he didn't have his cute little yellow rain coat, he probably wouldn't go outside. I already got him some winter boots for when it snows. I'm currently searching for a cute winter jacket!

has anyone out there found the dog "snuggie" for sale at area retailers? i don't want to buy online because i want to be sure about size, but i've called a bunch of area petcos and petsmarts and they say they've got none. i really need a snuggiee for my son so we can be twins!

our min-Schnauzer Burton ( Collared here: http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/features/mutts/blog/2009/08/sweet_miniature_schnauzer.html ) has a blue turtleneck sweater for winter. He too loves his sweater, and will pull it out of the basket when he wants to go outside. He thinks it's great! Practical too... he gets chilly.

No dog coats or sweaters in my house and there never will be. My aussie can handle the cold just fine.

Well greyhounds are short haired with no undercoat so they do get cold. I like to be outdoors a lot - even in the snow and so do they - so I have sweaters, fleece and actual winter coats for them. Without the coats we wouldn't be able to stay outside in the cold weather for more than 5 minutes and thats unacceptable.

Minpinmama- I was in Wegmans in Hunt Valley tonight and they had snuggies for dogs. They were in the middle of the store with the seasonal items. I do caution you if you are planning on going there on sunday it will be crazy in Hunt Valley due to the Race for the Cure. Think Pink!
