Does Bo Obama need a furry friend?

Animal advocates are banning together, hoping to whisper a little message into President Obama's ear: Bo Needs a Friend.

That's actually now an official campaign to get the First Puppy a playmate, with its very own website.

Organizers, which include representatives from Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Los Angeles, Best Friends and the Companion Animal Protection Society, are trying to organize a letter writing and email campaign so that the First Family will adopt a shelter dog to keep Bo company. Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog, came from a breeder, a gift from Sen. Edward Kennedy.

There's an unmistakeable undercurrent of anger in the group's mission -- they're upset that the Obama family missed an opportunity to send a message about the pet overpopulation in the country and the importance of adopting.

For whatever reason, I'm sure Bo would enjoy some dog play on the White House lawn.

I think that's wrong. It's a personal choice whether to get a dog from a breeder or a rescue organization. Yes, it would have set a good example for the president to adopt a dog, but he didn't, and he had every right to make that decision. He has children, and one of those children has health concerns (allergies? asthma? I can't recall). He made the decision he felt was best for his family. Actually, Ted Kennedy made the decision, and I didn't see anyone criticizing him... The time these organizatios are spending harassing the president could be better spent fundraising to help other dogs.

Are the members of these groups going to take up a collection to buy the extra medicine the Obama daughter with allergies will need? Are they going to offer to take turns living in the White House and sitting up with her at night when she gets an asthma attack from dog hair? Are they going to tutor her in the classes she misses at school if her asthma gets worse?

The Obamas' choice was not between a shelter dog and a special breed; it was between a special breed that is hypoallergenic and no dog at all.

The reason Senator Kennedy had Portuguese Water Dogs was so his adult son and several of his nephews and nieces could visit without ending up in the hospital. He wrote in his memoirs that his son's asthma kept them from having a dog at all when he was young.

Would dog lovers prefer to see the Obamas adopt a shelter dog and then have to get rid of it when the girl's health worsened?

'Hypoallergenic' dogs can be found in shelters/rescues too!! My Cairn is a rescue dog and one of the so called 'hypoallergenic' breeds. Lame excuse to not adopt.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
