Rescue Inc responds to Baltimore's tattoo pledge

Ok. So yesterday afteroon two of the guys from Rescue Ink called me -- their publicist had told them about the amazing tattoo pledges underway in Baltimore.

I had a conference call with Johnny O, the one in the hat, at left, and Eric. They only go by first names.

Anyway, they were floored with the tattoo pledges. And they really would like to come back to the city -- they were here quickly a number of months ago after Phoenix, the pit bull, was burned and died. As a non-profit, they've got to figure out a way to pay for a trip, but it sounds like something that they're at least now thinking about. Read my whole story here.

"We never say no, especially when it comes to animals," said Johnny O. "We have an idea of what Baltimore is about."

In the meantime, Eric said stopping animal abuse is all about working together. Not being vigilates, but being aware and together as a city. That attitude, he says, will have potential abusers on guard.

If I'm an abuser and I’m worried that everyone is watching me, it’s going tomake me think twice," Eric said. "That’s kind of what we do to people. They say, 'I better not screw around cause I never know who’s going to call on me.' No one take crap....."

By the way, we're now up to 64 people pledging to get paw print tattoes if Rescue Ink comes to town!

Could you tell me where to sign up to pledge for the tatoo? Thanks.

Time to come up with fundraising ideas!

I think those getting tattoos could match the cost and put it towards paying Rescue Ink. So if your Tat is 50, we put in 50 to the fund. We could all get Tattoos together, pool the match money, and tell the Rescue Guys we are ready for em!

Or maybe we could find a tattoo shop around here interested in helping the cause and giving a large group discount for tattoos, freeing up our tattoo money (or at least part of it) for getting them here?

Orrrr we could ask one of the local shelters to get involved. Isn't BARCSfest soon? Maybe they/we could sell temporary paw print tats, or facepaint paws, or something.

I think Caitlin's idea is a great one. Let's get local tattoo artists to chip in some time & energy. We could have a "Ink for the Animals" day in Baltimore where the artists donate part (or all) of their proceeds of all the animal tattoos done that day to a fund to get Rescue Ink to come to Baltimore. And those who already have tattoos or can't get them for religious/health reasons could just make a donation to the fund.

PLUS this would bring national attention to local needs and shelters. Maybe they could even make it part of a show? And raise funds for local shelters while they were here?

Maybe a dogwash in the same vein as a carwash? I don't know the logistics of this because most dogs don't like being washed (mine doesn't really care) but maybe set up a station somewhere where people could donate then use products we have on hand. Beats using the bathtub..

This is great, i'm a Tattoo and and animal lover and have 6 cats of my own. I would be proud to do this for my fellow furry friends.

I'd never get a tatoo for a variety of reasons, including religious reasons, but I'd be willing to provide financial support to the effort. Could the Baltimore Sun establish a fund for contributions?

Jill,

Not to add to your workload, but could you establish some sort of email list for the people interested in this project? We could all email and eventually meet to come up with a fundraising activity to get the guys here. I'd be happy to jump in and help in whatever way (and to also stick to my pledge of getting tattoo!). I coordinate events for a private company and volunteer my time coordinating events for a local police group, so what's one more event to plan? :)

I too love Caitlin's idea. I would volunteer to help sell the fake paw print tats at the fest.

And as someone who is on a rather strict budget it would be awesome if the tat artists gave us a little help on getting our ink and we could put the difference towards getting the guys here!

What if we did a 50/50 at the fest as well to get the guys here? like 1$ a ticket, 3 for 5 and 10 for a Dog length (head to butt) and we can walk around with a avg sized dog (you know so those with mini pooches dont feel "taken advantage of")

I would be happy to help with a hotel room... I certainly have enough points to donate. Who should I connect?

I had posted earlier under the last update that it would be great if some really good tattoo artists came forward and volunteered to do the paw print tattoo's to help with the cause, then each person getting a tattoo would pay an amount to get their paw print tattoo and 100% of the money from all the tattoo's would then be donated to BARCS. But since Rescue Ink needs money to cover their expenses to travel here maybe we could all do the tattoo's one day soon then spit the money, half to BARCS and half to fund the men's expenses to come to Baltimore. We could do the actual tattoo's, but also sell the fake paw print tats like someone said, and also just take donations from people who want to help get Rescue Ink to Baltimore but don't want a tattoo.

WOW! This convinced my sister to get her first tattoo ever!! Now im even more excited! As if that was possible!! LOL

Don't forget that there are organizations already in Baltimore committed to humane education for youth and stopping dog fighting and animal cruelty that would welcome your donations and your volunteer time too!

I think (or certainly hope) that all of us who are doing this are active with a number of animal organizations. The idea behind bringing Rescue Ink to Baltimore should be to get the press's (and therefore others') attention. And when Rescue Ink comes here, we should get them to visit our animal organizations as part of the deal.

I agree with "baltimoregal!" I was one of the first to post with ideas (including a round of drinks for them) and suggested they come to promote/give awards to those that are on the front lines fighting animal abuse and maybe come to BARCStoberfest. And then came the paw-print tatoo idea to entice them here. Initially, I felt that would leave a lot of animal advocates out of being involved because not everyone really likes "tats." But I will support that effort (without getting one) in any way I can but I've been getting concerned that we were losing sight of why we really want them to come here. And that's why I like "baltimoregal's" comment - and yes I'm a volunteer at BARCS. That they are considering coming here for a "rally" is great news!

I hope we can get the former "gang banger" Humane Society program here - I listened to an NPR interview with him and he said he has been successful because gang members will listen to him because of his gang affiliation. (Now he says he has the backing of the biggest gang in the country - HSUS.) How will that community in Baltimore City involved in breeding fighting pit bulls receive Rescue Ink? I know we love them but how about that group of people that we really want to impact? Just some thoughts . . . I think too much sometimes - I know.

How incredible! I wish I still lived in Baltimore, I would jump all over this. I am planning to get a tattoo for my rescue hound Duffy who passed away last year. I would love to do that in honor of him and support this kick *** cause!

Eric's holding a Min Pin!!!! He could be my baby daddy! Is he single?!

Hi Jill. My name is Tracy and I am with Baltimore Humane Society. I recently read your story about Rescue Ink and the pledges to get them to come to Baltimore. I'd like to add an extra offer to the pot. Baltimore Humane Society will offer our grounds to them, as well as everyone who wants the paw print tatoo. We would essentially be their make-shift "tatoo parlor." I'll even pledge to get the paw print tatoo and I'm sure a few other BHS employees would also.

I'm also sure I could convince a hotel to donate a room for a night or two, as well as coordinate a transport (people to drive to pick them up and take them home), if they agree to come to Baltimore and BHS- just get me the info on what they need (room, transportation, etc) and I'm sure I can make it happen.

I'll get a paw print or 2 if they come to town. I think getting local tattoo artisits involved is a great idea with half the cost of a tat "going to the dogs"

My housemate, Andy, and I are in the process of putting together a benefit show at the pub where I work. We can rent it for free and have tons of room. We'll be charging a door fee and having a ton of animal related things to raffle off. ALL monies from the door and the raffle WILL BE going to the Rescue Ink boys.
We're nailing down the date with my boss this week and getting the ball rolling.

This post is really Great. I think so it has valuable information.I am Really crazy about Pledge, since it has become most popular. Thanks lot for this post.I will visit this post again because I want more Information about this Tattoo. Tattoo increase sportiness in person 's life

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
