Reward for Phoenix burning info now $8,500

The reward fund for information leading to an arrest in the case of Phoenix, the pit bull puppy set on fire in Baltimore last week is growing exponentially.

Officials now report the amount has reached $8,500.

BARCS has collected $5,000.

Animal Control has collected $1,000.

And the Humane Society of the United States is offering $2,500.

Just hours ago, the reward fund was at $6,000.

"This poor dog suffered a painful and needless death and we want accountability for this vicious act of animal cruelty," Ann Chynoweth, senior director of HSUS’ Animal Cruelty and Fighting campaign said in a statement.

Baltimore City Animal Control is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Baltimore City Animal Control at 410-396-4688.

Phoenix, a one-year-old pit bull puppy was doused with gasoline and set on fire in Southwest Baltimore last Wednesday. The dog was euthanized on Sunday.

I think it's great that people are donting money towards the reward, but at the same time, I'd love to see the same amounts of money being donated towards the care of animals currently residing in shelters and rescues. Without funding, the groups that fought so hard to save Phoenix, and thousands of other dogs, wouldn't be able to do so!

Agree with your comment Suzy. Animal shelters and care workers are terribly underfunded, especially in these tough economic times. That said, the individual who purposefully doused Phoenix with gasoline and lit her aflame is a sick and twisted individual and must be taken off of the streets. Animals now - children later?

You make a good point, Suzy. My hope is that the people who are so passionate right now about Phoenix will be galvanized to take further action (financial or otherwise) on behalf of the countless other needy animals. Sometimes all it takes is one eye-opener--fingers crossed.

I Swear If I lived in a town with no police assisstance, this guy who did this would so be lynched.

Chances are that no one will be found that did this horrific act.........so the $ will go ultimately to BARCS. Personally contributing to this cause, I feel it is a win-win situation.

I agree with all three of you. I donate to a variety of animal rescues throughout the year, and I especially try to give in special need situations like this one. My dog is a rescue and I feel that giving back is part of my responsibility as an adoptive pet parent.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
