Animal House Friday: Calling all movie critics

It's Animal House Friday again...and we're gonna try something different. I am head over heels in love with the video of Peter Hermann's kitty, Mashu, doing battle against the evil medicine hidden in her tuna.

I'd like people to watch the video, and then comment on it in their best movie reviewer voice, critiquing the kitty's performance, Peter's filming skills, the editing, score and videography.

Of course, if anyone has any ideas to help poor Peter get that kitty to take the medicine without an ordeal, that would be great, too.

As usual, one of the commenters will win a fabulous Unleashed prize.

My stupid work computer won't let me watch the video ( I guess they expect work). As a veteran of medication battles and many "spit out," slimy pills, my vet gave me the ultimate tip: cream cheese. It's the only thing they won't try to "eject."

Great music, interesting cutting; my favorite part remains Mashu "burying" the medicine. Peter, do try Mashu on "naked" treats before grinding in pills. I suspect a bitter flavor may be putting her off things she might otherwise like. A friend suggested "Pill Pockets" which are one-gulp treats. Or you can go back to the "Young Frankenstein" approach previously mentioned... Good luck!

In the style of Kiro and Tutunyseiko, but with clear nods to Scorsese and Bosch, director P. Hermann and veteran cutter M. Catalini have produced a paean to contemporary art-house minimalism that nevertheless finds its soul in a transcendent, if overloud, scoring symbolic of post-post-modern ennui. A deceptively political film, Mashu explores the perils of a single-payer healthcare system while ever reminding that reform brings the unexpected consequences that have buried previous civilizations while giving rise to individual greatness. Almost mockingly, the two filmmakers sear the narrative's apparent happy ending with the inescapable sense that the worst is yet to come, should we allow our lethargy to get the best of us. I highly recommend this effort to anyone with a minute to kill and the guts to watch it die.

When I worked at a vet, we used a pill popper stick. You put the pill on the end, scruff the cat, and quickly pop the pill down their throat. In theory of course. It usually works, but some people may not feel comfortable with being that hands on giving the pill.

I love Mashu! Great work, Peter & Co.!

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
