Colorful paintings capture dogs' spirit, humor

If you're in the market for some dog art, or if you'd just like to browse a canine-oriented collection, you might want to head down to Solomons this month.

Artist Mimi Little, who specializes in colorful, vibrant and fun doggie depictions has an exhibit at Annmarie Garden through June 30.

The artist will be there Friday, June 12 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Little has been working on the dog paintings for two years. She says they aren't exactly portraits in the traditional sense. She tries to bring the personality of the animal to life with unusual angles or by focusing on individual parts of the animal – beseeching eyes or “don’t bother me” body language.

She incorporates multimedia, collage, found objects and crystals.

Another of her series of paintings, influenced by shore birds in Florida, will also be featured in the show.

Little will lead workshops on Sunday, June 7, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. That's short notice to get over there, but she'll do it again on Saturday, June 13 from 10 am to 3 p.m. Little will be teaching a looser way to approach painting using a variety of multimedia techniques and focusing on the composition of the painting to bring the work to life. The cost of one workshop is $50 or $90 for both days.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
