Collared today: Izzy

NAME: Isabella Claire

NICKNAMES: Izzy or The Izzer

OWNER: Reada Kessler

HOW THEY MET: I got Izzy from a breeder in Florida. I was actually supposed to get another puppy but the bulldog mommy unfortunately smothered her pups while feeding them not long before I was supposed to get her. I got first pick of the next litter and that was my Izzy.

AGE: 3

HOME: Federal Hill/Riverside

BREED: Miniature English Bulldog

BEST TRICK: She knows sit and lay down. But her best trick has to be being so cute that she can get away with almost anything!

FAVORITE ACTIVITY: Jumping on humans. Running around my sister’s front yard. Sleeping on the bed or the couch.

FAVORITE FOOD: My dog is a canine trash can. She will eat ANYTHING. I have yet to find something she won’t eat. But her favorite has to be whatever I’m eating at the time.

FUNNIEST MOMENT: Well, it wasn’t funny to me at the time but: Izzy absolutely hates dog clothing of any kind – costumes, hats, bandanas. It makes her miserable. Her first Halloween I got her all dressed up in a ladybug outfit. She tried to resist but once she realized it wasn’t coming off, she just lay on the floor pouting. I felt bad so I took the costume off. The first thing she did? March to the middle of the living room floor (carpeted), look me straight in the eye and pee on the floor. Then she marched into the bedroom and went to sleep. I guess she told me! I still put birthday hats on her once a year but she’s not happy about it.

SHE'S A PEOPLE DOG: Izzy seems to prefer people to other dogs. She’ll play a bit but she always comes back to where the people are standing so she can jump all over them. (She still hasn’t gotten the hang of “down.”) Her spotted ears are her best feature. When we lived in Northern VA, Izzy loved her vet and the staff there. But she would get SO excited and was so hard to calm down that they nicknamed her “Crizzy” which is short for Crazy Izzy. She’s still my “Crizzy” to this day.

IF IZZY HAD A MOTTO FOR LIFE, IT WOULD BE: “If you’re not slightly out of control, you’re not trying hard enough.”

Your 'Funniest Moment' reminds me of my furbaby, KC. While i was away at school, she lived with my husband, then my boyfriend, at his apartment. One day, he called to tell me that shortly after getting home from work, KC has run into his bedroom, jumped on the bed, and proceded to pee, while he stood in the doorway watching!! My response was, "Well, what did you do to make her mad?!?" HA! Sounds like Izzy would totally understand!! KC also hated doggy clothes too. She thought they were some sort of punishment and looked miserable. Thanks, Izzy, for giving me a smile =)

Very cute and cool looking dog...and one that hates doggy clothes-my kind of dog for sure!!!

I agree with Nicholas. She sure is cute. But I would have loved to see her in that ladybug costume. Too funny.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
