Animal House Friday: 9-5 with furry ones

Alright. So we know Take Your Dog To Work Day is more or less a bust in the Baltimore area.

Thanks to allergies, unwilling bosses, the uh, reality of having mutts running around a work environment, this more or less isn't happening.

However! That doesn't mean we can't imagine how it would have been had we brought our dogs, kitties, birds, goldfish, ferrets -- whatever, into the office to hang with Mr. Burns all day. For this Animal House Friday, and the usual prize enticements that come with it, let's talk about how we think our animals would do, had we brought them into the office.

I'm pretty sure my kitties would be something of a disaster. Pumpkin would start jumping on desks, in garbage cans and eating everyone's half-finished sandwiches and desk candy. Leo would probably be trying to balance himself atop the one-inch cubicle boundary markers -- right before he started shredding all the paper in the tri-state area. (And the Sun, as you might guess, has a LOT of paper...)

Lucy would be a disaster. Jumping up for kisses and treats (she knows not to do that, but she tries anyway), inadvertently scaring people who are afraid of pitbulls, licking any unattended surface...and she'd probably pee on the floor too. Seems to be her thing with new environments. She's a good girl and we love her to death, but there's a reason my parents don't want to babysit her anymore.

Honey, my golden retriever, would definitely knock a bunch of yarn off the shelves with her bushy wagging tail. Then she would politely snuffle a bunch of skeins together and lay down in the middle of them.
And for doggie humor, she would probably start licking her crotch in the middle of the shop. Oh, and barking at any and all passing pups is also very entertaining. (to her, only)

When I first got my puppy, Lilly, I couldn't stop talking about her at work. So when she got a little older, I brought her in so she could meet all of the coworkers. She had so much fun sleeping on my files, investigating all of the cubes, smelling and licking everything and everyone, and of course, hiding everytime someone from outside of our dept. came to our floor! My dachshund Winston would do what he loves most - sleeping. On my lap, on my files, on my keyboard, anything! He is such a cuddlebug. That or he would wander off sniffing and investigating all he could. Of course, I can only imagine him trying to get through security since I work for the Federal Government. Based on how strict they are here, he would probably have to wear the guest name tag! "Hello, my name is Winston!"

Here at i Love Dogs, we have Take Your Dog to Work every Friday. Read about the way lovable Lucy keeps things calm in our office!

Replacements boasts a pet-friendly atmosphere, but I often wonder how they keep the big dogs from knocking over the china and the crystal.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
