Reward for information on who burned Phoenix

Jennifer Mead-Brause, executive director at BARCS, just sent this update to Unleashed. The reward fund for information leading to an arrest in the case of Phoenix, the pit bull puppy doused with gasoline last week and set on fire, stands at $3,000. Phoenix died earlier this morning.

Mead-Brause writes:

As her body was trying to heal, her muscles were producing natural chemicals that are excreted through the kidneys. Unfortunately her kidneys could not handle the process and began to shut down. Due to kidney failure, and the long road still ahead for recovery, the Veterinarians that were caring for her decided it would be best to euthanize her.

She touched the hearts of everyone that came in contact with her and anyone who heard her story. We can only hope now that someone will come forward so that there can be a conviction on this case.

BARCS has a reward set up called the “Phoenix Reward” where we are collecting money for anyone who can identify the young men responsible for this cruel act of violence. The reward at this time is at $3,000 and most likely will increase over the next few days.

We have received hundreds of calls from the community and many saying they are contributing to the reward. We will keep posting the updated amount on our website.

And people fear 'pit bulls'....??

No one can hurt you ever again Phoenix.

This is so sad, but I am relieved that her suffering is over.

At least now she's out of her misery and in a happier place. Hopefully Karma will prevail and the monster(s) who did this, and those that watched and did nothing, will suffer a similar fate. If caught, I hope the Judge will give the stiffest sentence available, which still won't be enough.

Bless her precious heart. Thank God for all the good people who came together to try to show her the love that she deserved. Pitbulls are absolutely WONDERFUL dogs, I have two English Bull Terriers... very similar breed... great with kids, great with other animals, a joy to share my life with. I pray to God that the obviously mentally disturbed people who did this suffer the same type of torture and brutality they found so easy to deliver to an INNOCENT puppy. If you can harm an innocent dog, you can harm an innocent child or another human just as easily. It's all linked to a pathetic attempt to express power...by those who are POWERLESS.

I hope you find out who did this and they are put in jail for this crime they killed a innocent pet if they did not want her they should have dropped him off at the pound God will punish you for this some time in your life.

The heartlessly cruel and emotionally-defunct bastards who are personally responsible for this heinous and vicious attack on Phoenix should all burn in hell. Measure for measure, these scum-bags should be smothered in gasoline and set-on-fire. All who are so insensitive to bring emotionless acts of violence against any people and animals alike should be identified and removed from our society so cold-blooded acts of cruelty can be averted. Life just doesn't make any sense sometimes. Some people are just hardwired to do nothing in their lives but subject the innocent to indiscrimnate violence. I am not a PETA fanatic or a member. Just a person who owns two loving Newfoundlands.

I believe in justice for the dog, and i believe that a handout to those abusers of what they did, someone should do it to them, if they thought that fun, then let the fun continue with them being the victims this time, let us laugh as those dyfunctional sub humans burn in hell

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
