Pit bull hanging on at hospital

According to a story in today's Sun by Brent Jones, Phoenix, is in stable condition at an unnamed hospital in Pennsylvania. Sounds like the next few days will be touch and go as she fights potential infections and other burn-related issues.

In case anyone missed yesterday's stories, someone in Southwest Baltimore doused the 1-year-old pit bull puppy with gasoline and set her on fire. A police office saw her in flames and put the fire out with a sweater. There is a $1,000 reward being offered for information on who might have done that to the dog.

Unleashed will try to keep you posted on Phoenix's condition and related news.

Give me a pit bull over the company of humans any day.

Exactly, the worst part was this dog was still excited to see people even after the horrible event she just suffered. If you saw the video her tail was wagging around the BARCS staff. Sad story, and thanks to the BPD officer and BARCS for working on this dog.

It makes my heart break when I hear gross abuse stories like this. I think it would be worth the time and effort for the shelters and rescues of Baltimore to come together and host an end to animal abuse rally. A symposium like this could effectively raise awareness and educate the community at large about animal abuse. In regards to little Phoenix, pitbulls have a strong spirit and with her bright eyes I hope she'll pull through.

It is horrible that people will train animals to fight one another. It is disgusting and horrible.

Thanks for the update--have been checking throughout the day! Hang in there, puppy. You have a great life to be lived! Kudos to the vet people! You are all angels

Rest in Peace sweet angel.

where can one make a donation to help increase the reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who set the dog on fire.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
