Phoenix the burned pit pup passes away

The staff at Metropolitan Veterinary Associates reports that Phoenix, the pit bull who was doused with gasoline and set on fire in Southwest Baltimore this week, died this morning.

Julie Hirsch, a nurse, told Unleashed that Phoenix was going into kidney failure. Her face and rear quarters, where most of the burns were, had swelled considerably and she wasn't recognizable.

A few hours ago, nurses brought the one-year-old dog outside to be put down. They wanted her to be outside, not in a cage.

Hirsch said the entire hospital staff was moved by Phoenix, her story and her spirit. When the dog was initially treated Wednesday at BARCS, she wagged her tail at doctors despite the immense pain she must have been in.

Staff at Mainline were in tears this morning.

The staff went above and beyond in treating Phoenix, hoping to show the dog love, to show her that not all people are bad.

"It's just really traumatic," she said. "I've been doing this for 10 years and I've seen a lot of abuse, but I have never seen cruelty like this. This is downright disgusting."

On its website this afternoon, BARCS officials wrote that they want to, "thank everyone who came together to try to save this amazing and courageous dog."

I'm so glad she got to know love and tenderness in her short life.
It's not fit to print what I think of the people who did this to her.

May she rest in peace. And may her killers be caught and tried for their horrible crime

May she rest in peace and her killers be brought to a swift justice

I live in Baltimore, and this is f---ing disgusting what these people did to this dog. I believe that animals should have the same legal rights as human victims, with regard to murder and assault. I feel this is logical, since it has been proven that people who do these things to animals eventually do it to humans too. It's about time our society evolves and updates laws to protect our fellow creatures created by God.

may that puppy rest in peace may the killers be brought to justice.that is animal abuse

Phoenix is in a better place now and no longer in the extreme pain.
She's running free and happy and that's how it should've been for her all along.
I hope the a%&holes that did this are found and dealt with before the law can step in.
There is no excuse for this inconceivable incident and those who are reponsible should pay dearly. Rest peacefully Phoenix, you are loved.

God bless that poor dog, and may she rest in peace. Cruelty to animals is the worst of injustice, because while people in general make their own calamities for themselves, animals are innocent and do not deserve these kinds of abuses heaped upon them by the weakest minded of idiots.

I sincerely hope that these barbarians who have no further right to remain animated in any shape or form as far as I'm concerned get doused with gasoline and burned themselves, then are saved by medical intervention and allowed to live in a cage for the rest of their waste of a life until they themselves rightfully go into internal organ failure, hopefully locked in with an extremely violent offender three times their size whose only pleasures in life are his love for animals and beating the stuffing out of those who are cruel to them. A fitting punishment, I believe. Sorry for the rant, but this disgusts me so bad it makes me want to cry.

Many thanks to the good people at Metropolitan Veterinary Associates for their efforts to make the last days of this dog's life as comfortable as possible. They should consider themselves heroes. My God pour out his blessings on each and every one of them.

You know what's ironic about this entire thing? That the government has been trying to pass legislation for years to regulate and even ban pit bulls because of their supposed "violent tendencies", never realizing that animals, much like the piles of trash that did this to this dog, are the end product of how they're raised. Is there something I'm misisng here?!?

RIP sweet Phoenix. I hope whoever did this to you is found and put away for the rest of their lives. You didn't deserve this =(

Baltimore resident humans appear dangerous to dogs.

Can we not ban this breed of human?

Do you want to live next door to someone who is capable of this kind of thing?

Do you want your children exposed to someone who can inflict this kind of cruelty?

I really wish that the person or people associated with this crime could go through the same pain and death that this poor dog went though. It brings tears to my eyes that the dog died, I was really hoping she would make it.
so sad.

I am so sorry for what happened to this puppy. I am very grateful to the kind veterinary staff for taking such wonderful care of her. Thank you very much for loving her in the short time you had her with you.

I can't say what I really want to say on this matter so I will just say this. KARMA does get back at those who do wrong and so it will to whoever did this to poor little Phoenix. Pets are our best friends and should be treated as such. This has made me sick to my guts! Whoever did that to this poor pooch is an ANIMAL in every sense of the word. An animal with NO CONSCIENCE WHATSOEVER! God Bless poor Phoenix-she's in a better place now and those who committed this act NEED TO BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE! R.I.P. little Phoenix. You can rest now sweet thing. (If they ever find the psychos who did that, they should dl the same thing to them)!

The memory of this poor creature will live on. Let's hope the evil person who did this will suffer, if not in this life, then in hell when they get there.

I am so sorry Phoenix,we will always remember you and what you stood for.we will find the non human that did this to you,and GOD will have no Mercey on them, and neither will we,R.I.P. Sweet Baby

Phoenix - gone but not forgotten. Your fight against animal cruelty will continue!

Phoenix, How sorry we all are that you suffered the way you did, especially at the very end of your tragic life. I know you are a free spirit now running and playing with others. Feel our loving thoughts as you are released from this world and know you've brought so many of us together who want a better society where all living creatures are valued and respected for the gifts they offer this world. Thank you for that.

God bless you my dear sweet girl and know that you truly are the Phoenix who rose out of the flames and ashes.

In a city that is no stranger to new lows, this one really stands out. The innocence of an animal like Phoenix getting caught up in what can only be described as the evil side of human nature is what makes this so revolting. Words cannot even describe how sad this makes me.

My own dog, a pit bull mix, was rescued after being tied to a tree in someone's back yard with a telephone cord. I'm just glad she never had encounter the piece of s*** that committed this disgusting, senseless crime. Let this be a lesson to love your animals and treat them as well as you can can as often as you can.

This is so sad and disgusting. I would love to douse the SOB who did that to Phoenix. RIP baby girl.

The Phoenix rises above the ashes....my energies will be directed at returning the evil done to this dog to the person, or people who did this...so mote it be

The ignorant sons of b----es that did this should be doused and set on fire themselves. No animal, any breed, deserves this kind of treatment

Such a tragic and distressing story. How many more innocent dogs like Phoenix must die before the law takes animal cruelty seriously? Since Mercy's death in Texas in 2006 there have been many more pit bulls and other breeds of dog abused by human beings and still in many places in America animal cruelty is considered a misdemeanour. The definition of 'misdemeanour' is a 'lesser crime' - this is wrong! Animal cruelty is a heinous crime and should be regarded as such unanimously.
The consequence of hurting animals is pain which often results in the death of innocent and voiceless creatures. Make the punishment a deterrent and maybe these terrible cases will be less prevalent in our society. In 2009 we should have a system of justice that protects animals and ensures their welfare to the maximum letter of the law.

RIP sweet Phoenix.

Fly with the Angels. May your pain and suffering not be in vain and things will now change.

If someone can do this to an animal, they do have the capacity to do this to a human. Urge your local representatives to change the laws when it comes to animal cruelty and abuse.

RIP little puppy. In all your pain you still wagged your little tail. I am so thankful you were shown so much love in the last days of your short puppy life. Many blessings to the Police Officer who so galently helped you and for the Medical Staff who tried so hard to save your life. I will never forget you.

This is absolutely horrible. Maybe when they catch the coward or cowards that did this they will bring back waterboarding and use them to practice on.............

If i caught who ever did this, i would punch his lights out and leave him half dead , dogfighting scum bag

I lived in Baltimore for many years and experienced awful crimes against innocent people that I knew which made me leave that town in disgust. There are whole neighborhoods of lost people in Baltimore that have no feelings because of the poverty they grew up in and lack of education from the schools and their parents. I'm afraid that the zombies that do these sorts of cruel crimes against animals are also the type that will hurt people. City leaders need to try to educate the communities where these crimes occur with posters against dog fighting. I know I will not be visiting Baltimore any time soon.

My best friend and I were discussing that maybe gross injustices to other living beings would be minimized if the U.S. instituted the “eye for an eye” way of dealing with perpetrators of these types of personal crimes - rapes, assaults, murder, cruelty, etc - to people and animals. If a convicted perpetrator knew he/she were going to have to suffer the same injustice they inflicted on another being, maybe less of them would indulge their sick behavior on others. Until the punishment fits the crime (incarceration is not a fit punishment), this type of behavior will continue. As a loving mother of 10 animals, and a person who respects all living creatures, there is nothing more heinous than a person who inflicts their negative will on another person or animal. The one thing I do know is that God will judge harshly when the times comes. Until then, our hearts and lives will continue to be saddened and broken by the inhumane acts of others. Write to your local, state, and federal representatives. Maybe in time, we can change our world for the better.

God takes all animals to heaven as they have a place with him that does not require anything on their part while here on earth. Phoenix is there already. For this, I am eternally grateful.

I cried when I read about Phoenix last week, and was hoping and praying that her body would pull through. I'm not surprised that it was simply too much for her, but I'm still very sad and furious. When I was a kid, my dad told me that animals are God's gift to people. He's never talked about God very much, so that statement has stuck with me. Experience has taught me that animals are a pretty close approximation of divine love, and I know that Phoenix is finally at peace.

When will the government start protecting animals? Cruelty is cruelty and there should be a severe punishment to make these low life people think twice. Society would be better if people who did things like this were put away. Everyone would be safer and a better society to eliminate people who do things like this. Lock them up for 10 yrs or more and make them work behind bars and earn their keep. But keep them away from the rest of society. I hope karma gets these people. May they meet a fate worse than death.

I am so so sad that anyone could even think of harming any animal. What kind of person would do such a thing.Certain people in the city have a total disregard for humans and animals. When is someone in the city government going to wake up and have the guts to do the right thing. I am totally embarrassed to be a part of this city and would love to move out of state if I could. I really hope this person/persons are caught, tried and convicted. In additon to being tried, they need to spend at least three years working in a shelter taking care of these poor defenseless animals. These people are not human beings, but are animals themselves.

This entire story saddens my soul. It bothers me to my core that people use animals as a status symbol and discard them when no longer 'useful' or 'en vogue.' I have yet to be able to understand why/how animal cruelty is so hard to punish given its ramifications. Numerous scientific studies prove that cruelty to animals is one of the main gateway behaviors to becoming sociopathic. If a person will enact these behaviors on a defenseless animal, who's to say a baby or wheel-chair bound person isn't next? My heart and utmost respect go out to the individuals who work tirelessly to treat and save abused animals, especially those involved in Phoenix's case. I pray the individuals responsible for Phoenix's condition are brought to appropriate justice.

I cried my eyes out when I heard of the passing of Phoenix. I am trying so hard to get rid of the hatred I feel for the monster who committed this horrendous act. I hope they cannot look themselves in the mirror. It is unconscionable to even think that a human being is capable of this. They are not fit to live amongst the trash. Phoenix put up quite a fight and is an inspiration to us all in how precious life is. She wanted to live! As heartbroken as I am, I know that God did not want her to suffer and she has crossed over to where she will never feel pain again. My prayers go out to all of those at BARCS who worked tirelessly to give her a chance. Everyone of you is also an inspiration to the spirit and the will for God's creatures to overcome the most horrendous of adversities.
May God bless you and your continued work at BARCS.

I can't seem to stop crying after just checking online to see how Phoenix was doing today. Despite logic, I suppose, I really thought she was going to be alright. True evil walks this earth in the form of violent, soulless people like those responsible for this heinous murder. I am sickened.

I sent this article to Senator Cardin. I think it is important for our official representatives to know how we feel on this subject. We need to have tougher laws for these offenses. The innocent victims cannot speak for themselves. We need to do it for them. Please consider getting in contact with your representative to see what can be done. Thanks everyone!

May God bless the countless individuals and the heroic policewoman that showed Pheonix what it meant to be loved and cared for during her short life. She deserved nothing less and it sickens me that someone could hurt another creature so maliciously.

I hope that Phoenix serves as a shining example of forgiveness. Even after all that was done to her, she could still look at a human's face and wag her tail, even though she was in unimaginable pain.

I am sick of young men and women doing things like this to innocent animals -- giving breeds like Pitbulls an even taller hill to climb -- because they see no value in them other than as brutal entertainment.

Violence breeds violence. This is not something that should be taken lightly by the police, the person who committed this crime needs to face justice...as well as counseling.

What does this say about our society? What does this say about our youth? What does this say about our future? -- It's all very bleak.

I look at my two dogs that I love like they're my own children and I wonder how anyone could set something on fire and then watch it burn? Watch it writhe in pain? And do nothing about it.

It makes me very sad.

I had heard the police officer that came to her rescue said the people in the area were standing around laughing at this dog on fire. The officer wanted to take and arrest all who were there but was told she couldn't do that. WHY I hope that all who were there and those that did this will come to the same ending. They need to end up with the rest of the trash that lays on the city streets. Maybe one day we will vote the right people in office that can and will really clean this type of trash from our society. i hope Phoenix will have the justice she deserves when this people are taken out of our society. Trash breeds trash maybe we need to put them on a leash and make leash laws for them. They say pitbulls are dangerous I say these inbread idiots are alot more dangerous . Hope they all suffer the most painful death in the end.

I have not been right since I heard this story last week. I can't go a day without thinking about poor Phoenix. The day I saw the article, I wished death on the low life afterbirth that did this. It's now a week later, and I still feel the same way. And as far as the other hood rats standing there laughing, I wish they all rot in hell! I also want to thank the so called mothers that raised these punks! Good job!!! Phoenix is now pain free, may she rest in peace

There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean.
