Animal House Friday: Where to dine with doggy?

Once upon a time, dogs used to be a welcome presence in some Baltimore restaurants.

They'd stake out a spot by the bar. They'd greet customers. They'd leave good tips.

And then the health department decided fur mixing with food wasn't the best of ideas.

No more dining doggies.

How decidedly non-European.

However, now that's it's warming up and some area restaurants are setting up their outdoor dining tables, I thought it might be fun to ask readers where they like to dine al fresco avec Fluffy? (Or, hey, Fido, as the case might be....)

Are there any Baltimore or Baltimore-area spots that are particularly good to bring animals?

Does your dog like to order off the menu?

How does the little beast handle himself at a restaurant?

Also, would you like the city to change its policy and allow animals in city dining establishments? Let's get a discussion going. ... It's Animal House Friday, which means one lucky commenter will win a little something. The Sun's vast blogging staff will help me pick a winner around 3 p.m. ...

We search for places to dine with Peapod on a regular basis. We often take her to Iggie's on Calvert Street- greatest pizza in town and very dog friendly. Chesapeake Wine in Canton used to be dog friendly, but alas, no longer. The outdoor seats at Grand Cru in Belvedere square allow pet guests. A word of caution to those who want to dine out with your furry friend: be prepared to be thrown out, even after being seated. Host staff may fall in love with Fido, but managers will clamp down once they spot you. It's happened to use several times.

There's outdoor seating at Rocket to Venus and Cafe Hon in Hampden. Last time I treid the outdoor seating at Donna's in Charles Village my dog and I were turned away.

Yeah, I wonder where there's predictable ALWAYS seating for dogs. Sometimes seating is not good enough... -- Jill

Before I get into the places around Baltimore city, I will say that Annapolis is one of the most unfriedly places to grab a bite or a drink with a dog. We've been asked to take our dog off so many patios, that I won't even head down there anymore!

Some places we like to take the pooch if we're out for a walk in Baltimore are:

-Harvest Table (Locust Point) - Best for weekend breakfast/bruch/lunch

-Metropolitan (Federal Hill) - Only 4 tables in front, so the wait might be long. We prefer to get there early in the morning

-Rub (Riverside) - Always very friendly at the outside tables

-Little Havana (Key Highway) - Please don't go during peak hours. This is a early in the week/Saturday early afternoon-night and Sunday later in the afternoon-night type of place. We think that if the dog owners start abusing their generosity that we'll be thrown out!

-City Cafe (Mt. Vernon) - Haven't been here in two years, but they had always been friendly in the past

-Dudas (Fell's Point) - Again, very few tables, but this is one of the hidden and off the beaten path spots in Fell's

-Bonapart Breads (Fell's Point) - We've only been here once, but they didn't seem to mind that we had the dog outside with us

BTW - Has anyone from this blog driven by the Locust Point Dog Park :)

Earth is moving and it's really starting to take shape!!!

What an awesome list -- thanks! -- Jill

No point in talking about where we used to be able to go with our dog Dizzy. But there still are some good places. One good one is Harvest Table in Tide Point. There are tables outside and seems like there are always some other doggie to meet.

I don't have a dog, but I did notice a doggy guest enjoying the scenery at the Austin Grill last night.

On the Hill Cafe in Bolton Hill has three outdoor tables and my dog has always been welcome there. Last time we brought her, the girl behind the counter came out and gave her a big bowl of water. It's a great little neighborhood place.

Great post!

Ale Mary's in Fells Point is very dog-friendly outside, and best of all they have tater tots. Last time we were there, the majority of the outdoor tables had dogs with them.

DuClaw in Fells Point is also very dog friendly, and they have a ton of outdoor tables. May not be my favorite spot for food, but I will go there again and again because they are dog-friendly and have plenty of seating.

Mama's on the Half Shell in Canton - they don't have as many outdoor tables, and it is a bit more busy since it is right on the Canton square, but the food is great and the last time I was there the servers were very sweet to my dog.

Three... in Patterson Park is super dog friendly at their outdoor tables. The owner loves dogs and was so friendly to ours. Patterson Perk coffee shop is dog-friendly as well.

Not restaurant-related, but I have to give a shout out to the Canton car wash. We had our dog with us last time we went to get our car washed, and they were so accomodating to us. We waited outside with our dog, and the attendant brought out a big dish of water for him, and let us sit in the chairs under the umbrella to get some shade.

Ok, so it's not really "dining" but the Rita's at the Inner Harbor is super dog friendly. When you order your custard they provide a small cup of vanilla soft serve with a milkbone dipped in the middle for your dog.

Yum!! -- Jill

I often see dogs enjoying the outdoor tables at b in Bolton Hill with their owners.

With two hungry hippo's at home, I haven't taken Scout and Brogan anywhere yet because I'm a little wary that they'd go barreling down the aisle after EVERYONE's meal!

But, other than snowball stands, I'm not very familiar with dog-friendly restaurants in Baltimore County. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

P.S. If dog-friendly restaurants had signage posted (not sure if some do) that pets are welcome and valued customers, it might keep non-pet-friendly customers out and keep the Health Department at bay since like-minded people would be dining together?

I support dogs in certain bars, but it really is a health department issue. They have classified ice as "food". If the health dept removed that one rule, we could have dogs in a mom and pop corner bar that doesnt sell food. I would also like to see the health dept. license certain establishment to allow dogs. It would be good for business.

Todd Conner's in Fells has a weekly Yappy Hour deal for their half-dozen or so outdoor tables. I often see dogs outside DuClaw and have taken my dog there. I feel like it is bad form to pass her table scraps at a restaurant... yes? So she usually just gets an ice cube from me.

By the way, I noticed several shops in the new Annapolis Town Centre with dog water bowls and biscuits placed outside.

It's been a year since I was there with my dog (got a second dog and that's more juggling than I want to do in a restaurant), but as EL observes above, Austin Grill has a history of being dog friendly in their outdoor seating. They brought Molly a bowl of water and everything.

From Shuckers in Fell's Point...

AND DON'T FORGET!! Shuckers welcomes four legged friends on the patio 7 days a week. EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS YAPPY HOUR! In addition to our great Wednesday specials, if you bring your dog to dinner you receive 20% off the entire tables check*!

Iggies on Calvert Street! That place is absolutely fabulous. VERY dog-friendly with tons of pictures of dogs on their fridge, they have excellent pizza and you can BYOB! I definitely recommend it.

You know how some restaurants used to have sections for smokers/non-smokers? Well, how about if some restaurants create sections for "guests with pets"? I think that would solve the problem and everyone would be happy, including out four-legged friends :)

I second the comment about Metropolitan in Federal Hill! We have often had breakfast there with our baby and our dog, and both have been welcomed by the staff!

When Bert's was big in Charles Village, we took Foxy there several times. Each time the servers all made a fuss over her and would bring water and ice chips for her if it was warm. The Charles Village Pub is also pet-friendly in the summer with outdoor seating. Coldstone and Starbucks on St. Paul are also very dog-friendly.

I used to take my dog to Bert's (formerly Rocky Run) in Charles Village but unfortunately they closed. The dog-friendly outdoor seating was what got me to give this otherwise run-of-the-mill place a chance and it ended up being a regular spot for us until they closed.

Dizzy Issie's will have outdoor seating once they get it through the liquor board. They already have permission to have the seating but they need permission to have outdoor booze before they put the tables out.

I will also second or third Iggies. Great place. Pizza is my second favorite in town after Joe2 and they have an informal BYOB and BYOD policy.

Joe2 also lets you bring your dog into the outdoor seating. The food is awesome and there is live music pretty much every night.

I own Teavolve Cafe & Lounge in Harbor East. As a HUGE animal lover, I ordered our outdoor seating for that very reason.

Being in such close proximity to the Promenade & and on the ground level of the Eden Apts who is also pet friendly, it would be foolish of us NOT to have something for our furry friends. However, they will have to share space & snacks with the ducks that frequent our door.

We will be receive our seating next week.

Yellow Dog Tavern in Canton always has dogs/owners dining outside. Austin Grill, as mentioned, is very good with dogs on the patio area.

...........from Pretentious Pooch

We take Chai out to eat every Monday whenever weather permits, we usually end up at:
--Shuckers, Fells Point (her favorite)
--John Steven, Fells Point
--City Cafe, Mt Vernon
--Du Claws, Fells Point
--Checkers (all locations)
--Zachi Cafe, Mt Vernon
--Donnas, Mt Vernon
--M&S Grill, Harbor

All locations have been very accommodating (water etc) - also check out http://tinyurl.com/q8z4hf for MD dog friendly eats!!!

In fairness, it should be noted that the prohibition on animals inside restaurants is not a city Health Department "policy", but a state law.

I live in Towson and I've seen a couple of folks with their dogs enjoying lunch at the (newish) Italian cafe on the corner of Allegheny by the roundabout. I've eaten there, good stuff, but for the life of me I cannot remember what it is called!

Love the picture by Monica Lopossay...it's too cute.

Kooper's tavern> named after a dog.

Too bad dogs are not allowed inside restaurants as well as outside. They are better behaved and quiet unlike children and babies.

Our beagle Stanley goes to dinner with us a lot. He has been to the Austin Grill, Pasta Mista, Iggie's, Pazza Luna, City Cafe', Grand Central, and Little Havana's.
If we find a restaurant that offers outside seating but won't allow four legged friends, we don't go back. We always take our own water bowl and a bully chew stick. However a lot of restaurants listed above bring him a bowl of water without asking.

The Greene Turtle, Fells Point is also dog friendly. They have outside tables and offer fresh water to your four legged friends.

City Cafe in Mount Vernon is very much dog friendly at their outside tables. Even says so on their web site. I go there often. Outdoor tables ...Dogs...Just makes sense
