Australian shepherd raising orphaned kittens

After the mother of a litter of kittens was hit by a car and killed, Lakota, a 7-year-old Australlian Shepherd, stepped in to nurse the brood. The dog and kitties are at the family farm of Colleen and Robert Nesseth in Snohomish, Wash. Lakota's not mom, but close enough. AP Photo/The Herald, Dan Bates.

It never ceases to amaze and fascinate me when I hear stories about animals fostering another species. It happens over and over, even with species that we typically think of as sworn enemies. We humans do have many lessons to learn from animals.

She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
