Has the Bo backlash begun?
A&E Editor Tim Swift has more on First Dog Bo:
Yeah the pictures are cute, but not everyone is in love with Bo Obama. The young Portuguese water dog hasn't even had his official White House debut and GOP trash talk and the "gay" rumors have already started.
Yesterday on ABC's This Week, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich seemed rather grumpy at the prospect of the first dog's arrival. "I hope that the girls love the dog," he said. "I hope the family ... and all the pressure they’re going to be in ... finds it useful. And I think that this whole thing is fairly stupid."
Meanwhile, Brit Hume of Fox News went a step further insulting the poor pup. "[Bo's] not my type of dog... girly little dog," he grumbled. Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday, wisely sided with Bo and suggested the rest of the Fox News panel do the same.
The "girly" remark may stem from Bo's first outfit. It's always dangerous when little girls are the arbiters of your fashion sense. In the official White House photo, he's wearing a traditional Hawaiian lei in honor of the president's home state, but some bloggers think he's channeling his inner drag queen.
"Meet Bo, the Portuguese Water Dog, who -- based on his outfit is either just out of the closet or a little too quick on the gun to celebrate Gay Pride at the White House," the gay blog Queerty writes.
Yes, it's hard living at the White House, even if you are a dog.

Good grief. Those comments are laughable. I don't suppose their dislike of the puppy has anything to do with the prez's political leanings, eh?
And what's the deal with the "girly little dog" comment? I guess any fluffy pup or canine with curls is seen as feminine by Mr. Hume. Gimme a break.
P.S. Remember George (43) Bush's Barney, who nearly took off a reporter's hand? Guess that was a terrificly manly (and Hume-approved) dog.

Why are people starting with this type of mess already. Now here it while he is trying to do what he needs to do to get our country back in tact, the press was getting on his nerves about when was the dog coming, come on now, what is more important, a dog or cleaning up the country. Now that the dog is here, then the accusations start. Good Grief

I was glad to hear they had specific personal reasons for naming the dog "Bo"; it would have been very strange for him to have named the family pet after General P. G. T. Beauregard, which was the first thing that occurred to me. But I am worried by another news item, that one of their daughters has an allergy the dog could exacerbate.

Lol, now the conservatives are going after the friggin dog? lmao! Do you suppose they're even aware of the enormous mounting public backlash for their insistence on focusing on crap like this instead of what matters?

Anybody who thinks a Portugese Water Dog is a "girly" dog, doesn't know anything about them.
They are the Michael Phelps of the canine world.

Not sure if it's a good idea to name a dog anything that rhymes with "NO." It will confuse it and discipline will be a real challenge. Please .... alert the public, before every new puppy gets named after the First Dog.

Wow, I can't believe anyone is interested or outraged over this dog. It's not a rescue dog, is it neutered? Even funnier than the reporting on this dog is now they are reporting on the reporting of the dog. Who cares one way or the other? Oh yeah, geniuses, Bo or B...O.... stands for Barack Obama, its his initials.

Brit Hume is the worst journalist ever. BEYOND partisan, even when he tried to work for mainstream media.
Do you think he's mad because they didn't get a droopy old hound like him?
I wonder if mister "girly dog" is against BSL- or is he one of those who wants tough dogs only when it suits his cause?
1. While the dog is purebred and not from a shelter, it is a rescue in the sense that it was returned from its original owners (because their other dogs didn't take to it).
2. The very reason they got a purebred Portie is because the dog's coat is made up of hair like human hair, not fur- similar to a poodle- and therefore MUCH less allergenic to their daughter. A very good reason to get a purebred dog (my dog is a mutt, FTW).
3. You don't have to use "no" as a command- you really shouldn't- too common of a word. Use "stop" instead. Example- I never use "ok" as a command with my dog- I use "let's go" instead. She knows exactly what it means and never runs off if I use "ok" in a conversation.
4.The dog is only six months old so who cares if it is fixed yet? It's a male, they have a little more time.

Wrong in nearly every way. First, if someone is a 'dog person,' or truly loves dogs, they don't wait until they are in the public eye, looking to keep their ratings up, (not to mention middle aged), before they get a dog. Second, yes, a campaign promise WAS broken -- surprise, surprise. Third, it's only a pet rescue dog if you want to fantasize it as such -- 'it depends on what your definition of rescue is.' (Pet rescue is NOT having Ted Kennedy's breeder provide a dog to someone who then claims not to be able to keep it, and then allowing the Obama's to 'rescue' it.) Fourth, breeders/puppy mills everywhere will be getting orders for this breed of dog, simply because people want to emulate their new idol. Fifth, a problem of even greater proportion has now been created for our pet rescuers and rescue centers, who will be overwhelmed with dogs that have been obtained from these breeders but will not be kept for the long term. Sixth, number five creates an even bigger problem -- and that is for the animals themselves. What a doggone shame! And I mean it. Please stop making excuses for this inexcusable, self-serving public display.

Ummm PWD are an 'hypoallergenic' breed (note to those who worry about allergies and dogs - all the curly coated ones are designated as hypoallergenic because of how the hair catches the dander).

There are those who will criticize our President and his family regardless.
How childish can they get picking on a puppy?
Am so sick of the RRR who can find nothing good to say about anyone unless they totally agree with them.
ENOUGH!!

I love it when people say things like "wrong in nearly every way!" I sure wish I was as smart and all knowing as they are.
Almost everything said by opponents of this they can't prove- but that's how they won (stole?) elections for years. So now that the American public has wised up, all they can do is pick on a puppy. Sof what if Mr and Mrs didn't ever have a dog? They now have kids at an age they can begin to learn responsibility by caring for it. And were they suppose to get one and take it on the campaign trail. The right wing can't stand the fact that a nice, family guy who happens to be pretty liberal and a Democrat won.
Really sad and kind of creepy.

I never planned to own a dog. As a child I was afraid of dogs. But LIFE HAPPENS and now I own a pit bull that I love.
I'm sure the Obamas planned to pick a rescue puppy. But when a friend offers you such heartfelt a gift, do you turn it down?
The Kennedys made a generous offer that I'm sure was difficult to refuse. I can imagine that Oprah and other prominent dog lovers also "suggested" that the Obamas adopt their favorite breed.
And I can't think of a single pup that isn't cute and maybe even a little "girlie" at six months. Get a grip, it's a freaking dog.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. The GOP are really pushing the limit here.
