Lobbying continues over Obama family dog

One thing I learned yesterday during the It-is/It-isn't-a-Portuguese-Water-Dog drama was this: There are some very funny, clever and informative Web sites and blogs out there devoted solely to the soon-to-be First Dog.
I was tipped off by Greg Nelson, who yesterday was cheering when he learned that his beloved Labradoodles may still be in the running. He even has a new site devoted to his cause. He calls himself the founder and his 18-month-old miniature Labradoodle Arbo (above) the president. To show your Labradoodle love, you can even buy yard signs, buttons and dog T-shirts. All proceeds of sales go to animal rescue organizations and shelters.
If you're way into First Dog news (and who isn't?), here are some other not-to-be-missed sites and blogs on the topic.
American Kennel Club provides useful info on the search, materials on hypoallergenic breeds and facts on past presidential pets. Don't miss: The video of too-cute Portuguese Water Dogs
Dogtime.com has an amusing Obama dog blog. Don't miss: The poll with questions including: What name should the Obamas choose? (Chief and Veto are options as answers.) What should the First Dog's first toy be? (Osama bin Laden plush toy or Barack Obama's basketball shoes?)
The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America has a comprehensive site on the subject with everything from grooming tips to handling behavioral issues. Don't miss: The Test your PWD Knowledge quiz

I owned a water dog.... It loved licking faces.... it loved eating feces.... Couldn't stop it from doing either, especially after a quick lunch in the cat box.

Thanks for keeping us all up-to-date, Mary!

I own two portuguese water dogs. They are great dogs, but they are also extremely rare - less than 9,000 exist in the united states. That being said, I have been trying to rescue a third one for 6 years now with NO LUCK.
Trust me, there won't be any rescued PWD because there aren't any to rescue. If one is "rescued," it will be a contrived situation.
While the breed is fantastic, it scares me that they will be in the national spotlight and will probably end up trendy and bred in puppy mills.

Personally I just appreciate being able to open this blog and see such a great, happy picture!

Amazing we have a nation with an epidemic of homeless pets and the ASPCA has announced an estimated one million more pets will be homeless. Just what we need: A president encouraging the public to buy from breeders when tons of perfectly healthy dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens die in pounds at great expense costing each State EVERY YEAR anywhere from $60 to several hundred MILLION dollars a year. About 10% of county budgets on the average. That also pay for schools. Who want federal money for education. Homeless animals too poses serious health threats to the community. Nice going, Obamas!

Matilda hs been campaigning for 1st dog since December when it was announced that the President was getting his family a puppy. It's just a fluke that Matilda is a Labradoodle. Back then, there was no one campaigning. Since it was announced that the PWD and the Labradoodle were the contenders, the net has been flooded with 1st dog entries. You can see Matilda's plea to the President at toonecards.com. Labradoodles are adoradoodle! Support Matilda for 1st dog. Her Barack is as good as her bite!

ERIN SAID:"what we need: A president encouraging the public to buy from breeders when tons of perfectly healthy dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens die in pounds at great expense costing each State EVERY YEAR anywhere from $60 to several hundred MILLION dollars a year"
Um.....so Obama is getting a RESCUE DOG. LOL
I hope like hell he gets a Por Water Dog. All we need is a Labradoodle in the white house-first of all, they ARENT hypoallergenic-not even close, like the poodle and port water dog and I would seriously doubt Obama's judgement if he gets one with his allergic daugter.
Also, all we need is more idiots going out and buying labradoodles cause the pres has one-more idiot for profit breeders of mixed dogs! Yea!
Please please Obama, get a Port Water Dog RESCUE!
Signed,
One of your supporters!

Aren't they committed to rescuing a dog?
Wouldn't that set the right example for this world?
Wouldn't adopting a shelter dog (yes, they can find a hypoallergetic dog at a shelter) save millions of dogs lives as a result?
Please continue to support Mrs. Obama's original decision to adopt a shelter dog. It will save so many lives.
Blessings

I've been following the Obama puppy news on DogChannel.com. One of the editors of Dog Fancy and Dog World has been blogging about it there. Plus they've got updates on the latest developments.
That's a great one to check out, too, Mary
Thanks for the info. MC

Fact: 7 MILLION healthy PETS enter shelters in the US each year. Only half this number find new homes.
Fact: Adopting a pet from your local shelter or non-profit rescue WILL help ease the pet overpopulation crisis.
Fact: The AKC blocks legislation to stop commercial puppy mills in this country. The AKC/bredders are only concerned about profits, not animal welfare.

Who cares about the presidents dog?
What does it matter?

This breed makes wonderful pets, and their curly hairs are good for people allergic to dogs.

I am really hoping they will rescue a puppy from a shelter. This is a great opportunity for the Obama's to be an example to nation by rescuing a puppy. I will be extremely disappointed in them if they encourage puppy mills and encourage people to buy from puppy mills. We need to change and what a wonderful opportunity to begin with our President.

I guess that none of the dogs in the shelters in the DC-metro area were good enough for Kennedy and the Obamas. Buy one dog and get one (at a shelter) killed. Shame on Kennedy and Obama!

Silly me! I actually though Obama might be different and COMPLETE campaign promises.
If he can not deliver on a rescue dog (easy) than he will not deliver on anything else (hard).
So disappointed in BO! (both of them)

The Obama's needed a special type of dog which would not cause allergic reaction with the children. Portuguese Water Dogs are just that type of dog. You can read about Portuguese Water Dogs at: www.puppyschool.org/choosing_a_dog.html
