City holds hearing on future of dog parks

It might have escaped your attention -- given there has been little in the way of an announcement -- but Baltimore's City Council will be holding a public meeting tomorrow on the future of dog parks in the city.

The present of dogs parks is this: There is only one. In Canton.

With other groups working to start more -- including one at Patterson Park and one at Latrobe Park in Locust Point -- city officials felt it would be wise to take a comprehensive look at the situation.

Which might be scary, or might be good.

The meeting will look at "the current status of the City's Dog Parks, as well as exploring future steps that can be taken to provide safe space for youth, families and groups engaging in recreational activities and for dog owners and their dogs."

The hearing, originally scheduled in April but postponed, will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the Department of Recreation and Parks Administration Building at Druid Hill Park, 3001 East Drive.

The Locust Point Dog Park group encouraged its members and anyone else concerned with the lack of dog parks in Baltimore to attend.

Friend of mine from CDP and I will be going. He also just found out about it last night.

Yeah. Is anybody else a bit wheezed off that it's at 5 p.m.? I know of people who won't be able to make it because of work conflicts.

Wheezed???
Maybe miffed or PO-ed??
The New Director was to be in Patterson Park that day. Parks and Rec scheduled it! She was also scheduled to be at the meeting mentioned here. How can you be in two places at once? Did they want some people in one place and not the other? Makes you wonder with the little heads up about a public hearing. I took off of work to go to the meeting last nite. The only encouraging thing I heard was "The mayor wants Dog Parks in Baltimore City parks." Not sure what that means at this point or what road we need to go down to get there." Overall everyone who testified was in favor of Dog Parks except for one lone person who had some concerns. Overall the council people were good but Councilman Reisinger from Federal Hill-Locust Point area was awesome and right on point. Makes me want to move to South Baltimore.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
