Greatest American Dog
CBS has announced the 12 human/dog teams that will be living together and competing on its new series, "Greatest American Dog" -- and there are only two mutts among them.
If you don't mind suffering through a commercial, a CBS preview of the show is above.
The show, hosted by zoologist Jarod Miller, will follow the 12 teams as they compete in a series of challenges designed to measure each owners' ability to train their dogs. It premieres July 10 at 8 p.m.
At the end of each episode, a judging panel will eliminate one team. The winning team takes home the show's $250,000 grand prize.
I think we will be pulling for one of the two mutts -- Bella Starlet, who is described as a Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, Shih-Tzu, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retreiver and Pomeranian mix.
Here, then, are the teams:
-- Beth Joy, an acting manager from New York City, and Bella Starlet, a 10-year-old Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, Shih-Tzu, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and Pomeranian mix
-- Bill, a building maintenance employee from Flint, Texas, and Star, a 7-year-old Brittany
-- Brandy, a fashion designer from Orange County, Calif., and Beacon, a 1-year-old Miniature Schnauzer
-- David, a doctor from New York City, and Elvis, a 2-year-old Parson Russell Terrier
-- Elan, an aspiring dog salon owner from Portland, Ore., and Kenji, a 1-year-old Giant Schnauzer
-- J.D., a dog entertainer from Bend, Ore., and Galaxy, a 9-year-old English Pointer Border Collie and Labrador mix
-- Laura, a film producer from Los Angeles, and Preston, a 5-year-old Pomeranian
-- Laurie, a doggy day care owner from Stafford, Va., and Andrew, a 5-year-old Maltese
-- Michael, an aspiring comic from Los Angeles, and Ezzie, a 2-year-old Boston Terrier
-- Ron, a construction manager from Oxnard, Calif., and Tillman, a 3-year-old English Bull Dog
-- Teresa, a dog sitter from Fairfax, Va., and Leroy, a 5-year-old Border Collie
-- Travis, a bartender from Los Angeles, and Presley, a 1-year-old Boxer

what do people really think of this show. i mean i love these competition shows and i watch them on the regular. i'm a huge fan of america's got talent over on nbc that's staring up again tomorrow (whoohoo) but i don't know if dogs can sustain a whole show. what do you folks think? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm in favor of anything that includes a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The name alone would be worth an entire series. I kind of think it will depend on what they have the dogs doing. I love to watch dogs working at some of the jobs they were bred to do--herding, hunting, retrieving. Field trials and obedience competitions are fun to watch. So is lure coursing. And flyball and the dance competitions are also lots of fun. I'd rather see them working and playing at various doggie pursuits than doing lame things like riding around on skateboards.
I could probably watch a show once a week.

This should be an interesting show to watch. The dynamics of these contestants living in a house and competing should make for interesting TV.
Looking forward to the show and see if the personalities match that of the dogs :)

I love that they are incorporating Dog Agility into this show. It is one of the best ways of exemplifying the beautiful teamwork between dog and man! I used to compete in agility, and am now the president of Affordable Agility, Inc., (www.AffordableAgility.com)

As an avid dog lover I am not at all impressed with the 1st 2 episodes of this show. While I love most all dogs, I find it hard to believe these 12 were the "cream of the crop." Doesn't appear that a lot of time, money and effort went into the eliminations. Also, too much emphasis (in my opinion) on the owners and not enough on the pups. They all appear to genuinely love their dogs but the pair I'm most impressed with is Star (sorry, don't remember her human's name). Something definitely there.

I thought last night's elimination of Elvis was wrong. These owners are wusses for being afraid of Elvis. Tillman should have been eliminated - he didn't compete well at all. Elvis didn't need the leash on the teeter totter and did great in the maze. Andrew's owner shouldn't have cut out a bigger hole. I think that both Elvis and Andrew made the same type of mistakes but Tillman has no agililty.

Tillman cannot get eliminated because he is THE GREATEST AMERICAN DOG, period. We watch because of Tillman. Whether he performs well in agility - Tillman makes up in personality and charisma. The camera adores him and Tillman really ROCKS!! Bella and Beacon can go. Sorry to see Elvis go. Tillman needs to stay a lot longer. He is our favorite!!! We love TILLMAN!!!

My wife and I watched this for the first time last night. We own two “new breeds” (mutts) and thought this show might have potential-----NOT! It’s another reality “let’s see angst between people” formula. The dogs are great. We watched in amazement how Tillman got eliminated over two dogs and owners that were clearly not what the title of this program suggests. And they are being judged by magazine editors. One of which sits there like “Dr. No” stroking her little thing of a dog and passing bad judgment on all the big dogs. A little biased maybe? Shouldn’t the real judges be people who would be readers of these magazines? These smug, self-important cretins looked at the photo of Preseley and asked “How is this picture expressing joy?” What? The dog is smiling! Then the person that used “in-humane” methods to get her dog angry gets to move on and not Tillman. Sorry, this show should be buried like an old bone.

The show is the Greatest American Dog...(NOT Owner/Handler)....it stinks that the dogs are not being judged, but theHandlers are. Tillman is an awesome dog...he should have been one of the top dogs...Beacon should have gone instead...Beacon has no talent! - I now hate the show!
