And leave a little on the top

alpaca.jpg

This freshly shaved alpaca was one of many that came together recently for a joint shearing session at Alpacas of Montana farm, just south of Bozeman and about an hour from Yellowstone National Park.

Five Bozeman-area alpaca owners brought their alpacas to the farm for the animals' annual shaving.

About 80 alpacas live on the farm, which makes organic, naturally colored alpaca/wool blend yarn.

You can visit the farm's website here.

I just had to comment on the website link to the alpaca farm in Montana and encourage all of your readers to view it. What a totally different way of life, and so appealing! I have "met" alpacas in my life, and they are gentle, affectionate and very people-oriented animals. To raise them in such an amazing environment in Montana for their fabulous, luxurious coats (and NOT their flesh!), is uplifting and touching. Plus...I learned about a dog breed that I never heard of before -- the Turkish Anatolian guard dogs who keep the alpacas in...well, a pack. THANKS for this article!

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
