Pregnant men and puppy mills

Just a reminder: Tomorrow's Oprah show -- not to be confused with today's, which is about a pregnant man - will investigate puppy mills.

You can see a preview of the puppy mill episode here.

Many are happy to see Oprah -- who has owned purebred dogs, purchased from breeders -- lend her considerable clout to the issue. As mentioned a couple of days ago, Oprah now vows any future dogs she gets will come from shelters.

In Friday's show, Lisa Ling investigates the hidden world of puppy mills using undercover cameras -- much like the Humane Society of the United States did months ago in producing this report:

I'll be watching and TIVOing, but I'm not sure how this will go. Either my blood pressure will reach stroke level or I'll be crying so much I'll have to turn it off (similar to how my mom almost had to carry me out of "Eight Below").

omg this is bad i just wish the world would open their eyes and see whats going on

I just stumbled across your blog today and I'm so pleased to know that the Sun has made an effort to keep animal issues in the spotlight. John, thank you for your important work and allowing those of us who love animals to indulge in your blog!

It's important that people help in anyway they can. People like Mary (in the video) becoming informed and changing her actions is exactly what I hope stems from your blog. It's nice to know high profile celebrities are helping get the word out. I hope Oprah is true to her word... my mutts and I will be watching with baited breath!

Not to play devil's advocate but there's been a lot of exaggeration (in my opinion) on pet stores' connections with puppy mills. Petland is one of the bigger chains popular for causing the puppy mill scare in 2000, however, a good friend of mine who is a devoted animal lover owns one of these franchises. they have such little connection with their corporate side when it comes to where they get there puppies. puppy mill puppies are fairly easy to recognize. my friend's store has puppies from all USDA licensed breeders that he can personally contact. he frequently lets the puppies out of their kennels, and cares for them very well. I just think pet stores have gotten bashed a little too much.

I was sobbing my eyes out and clutching my little dog, and I hardly ever cry at anything. And there is so little we can do about it; it's just awful. Those poor, poor dogs.

So Michael Vick goes to jail for dog fighting and nothing happens to the owners of these puppy kills. Only in America

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
