Martha Stewart's dog dies

Martha_Stewarts_Dog_NYLS515285x189.jpg Martha Stewart's dog Paw Paw has died of renal failure.

The 60-pound chow, a familiar face on her television show and in her magazine, was almost 13.

Paw Paw -- so named because of his large paws -- "was a spectacular chow and an even more spectacular dog," Stewart wrote in a blog post about his death Saturday. "He was always my loyal companion, displaying the most agreeable temperament."

The dog's full name was Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow. Stewart had owned him since he was born, according to an Associated Press report.

"Even in his final days, Paw Paw just stopped eating and drifted off to deep sleeps, where he now rests peacefully, and, I’m most confident, quite happily," Stewart wrote. "I will miss him, always."

Its discusting how Martha Stewart used her dying paw paw as a photo op...!!! Posing herself, her other dogs, and other people with him. Let a dog die in peace.

I think if anybody else had taken those photographs and posted them online, we'd all be thinking what a loving tribute it was. It's obvious that she and everybody else in those pictures loved that dog. Let them do their grieving and memorialize the dog in whatever way they see fit. At least he was buried with dignity under a tree on the property and not in some bogus "pet cemetery"--or worse, cremated and stuffed into a plush toy.

Those pictures made me think of every dog I've ever loved who's had to be put to sleep--remembering each one's last day and his or her peaceful final resting place.

And no, I'm not a Martha person. I've never watched her show, nor purchased one of her magazines or any of her "products." I just saw an articulate dog lover.

I was sad to hear about the death of Paw Paw my sympathy goes out to you Martha. I understand your grief. I lost my beloved husky Adara. it was like losing a child for me. after 13 years it is understandable it hurts so i wish only the best for your healing in this grieving process. may Paw Paw rest in peace.

I loved reading the tribute to Paw Paw and looking at the pictures. I had tears running down my cheeks when I got to the end. What a beautiful keepsake Martha has forever.

So very very sorry.. I miss my dear dogs as well.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
