Description: A large and muscular breed, with a long rectangular head, a short coat and an appearance of being very noble and dignified.

They can be fawn, black, blue, brindle or a combination of black and white in color.

Behavior: An intelligent and loyal dog that, with an experienced handler, can be trained for protection work.

As they grow very quickly into a very large dog, their training has to start when they are young.

They enjoy exercise and will happily go along with the family on their outdoor activities. They also enjoy spending time at home in front of the fire.

The Great Dane is an affectionate dog -- gentle and delicate, without being timid.

They get along well with other dogs, household pets and children. They are ideally suited to the active family, preferably one living in a very large house. They are quick to alert the family of any strangers approaching their territory.

Tendency to bark: Low

Level of aggression: Low

Suitability as guard dog: High

According to "Pets for Obama" on Youtube, Pekes, Paps and Jack Russells are behind Barack. Great Danes take note

I'm barking this under Barak only because he's at the top of the blog at the moment. I can't refrain any longer from quoting Alexander Pope. It's a good thing I don't experience these compulsions very often.

I am His Highness's dog at Kew.
Pray tell me, Sir, whose dog are you?

This brings up another great topic (do I smell another blog brewing?) Have you ever noticed how dogs resemble their owners??? The dog park is a great place to try out this theory.

sorry- no way. as the owner of a mixed breed dog, you should have seen that Obama could have only been an all American.

I wish I knew if Barack was a great All-American dog or a trendy dog breed. Just can't tell at this point.

Months ago, I was hoping that Barack would take his two daughters to a Chicago shelter and adopt a great shelter dog for the family. That might have been enough to earn my support in the Kansas caucus last night.

Did you have to use that picture of Gibson!! That dog is UGLY!! Learn proper Great Dane conformation. He doesn't have it! (Gag)

Since people in Sweden gave an overwhelmingly support for Obama - if not in votes so in hearts - I think that an advice from the northern dark in Sweden should be allowed when it comes to chosing the right pet for the White House.

Why not choose at cat; they are adorable; soft, warm, and intuitive.
Which I think are characters that could of good use for Obama now that he has such big political challenges to deal with.

Obama should adopt a Great Dane

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
