Vick dogs don't look so vicious now

Best Friends Animal Society released these photos today of some of the 22 Michael Vick dogs that are being cared for by the animal sanctuary. That's Little Red above, looking like she managed to outlast her caretaker.

Suddenly, they don't look so vicious, do they?

All these photos were taken for Best Friends by Molly Wald, and they are reprinted here with the permission of Best Friends Animal Society. The society introduced the Vick dogs to the public for the first time at a press conference today at its sanctuary in southern Utah.

Vick dogs have been at Best Friends for almost a month, where they are receiving individualized attention aimed at socializing them and negating the effects of the time they spent in the former NFL quarterback's dogfighting operation in Virginia.

While some will live out their lives at the sanctuary; others are expected to be put up for adoption. Until then, they are enjoying good food, lots of exercise, and much attention in an effort to move them beyond their haunting past.

Wonderful story. I'm so glad these dogs had a happy ending. I pray that laws will be enacted in all states to help crack down on dog fighters. It's too bad that so many people don't realize the importance of dogs in their lives. Dogs only want to serve and love. What wonderful examples they are for us humans to follow.

How wonderful, they are sooo beautiful!!!! I wish I could give them all great big pit bull hugs... :] We just adopted a pittie we were fostering and she is so wonderful, a big ole snugglebug as I call her, she spoons with us and get's along with our other 2 dogs & 4 cats. Thank you so much for posting these pics, hope to hear more & more about these wonderful babies............... :]

I am so happy to see these dogs making strides towards being friendly sociable dogs. It was so sad to see what Vick and his affiliates put these loyal, reliable animals through. These poor dogs were only doing what they were told. I hope Vick rots in jail for many, many, many years for his deplorable crimes. He should never be allowed back in the N.F.L. again!

I have been so emotionally traumatized by the images in reading and hearing about the horrible, inhumane treatment and suffering inflicted upon these poor dogs to the point of having problems sleeping. I had no idea that men, women or children in the united states could be so cruel. I am so thankful to view pictures and hear positive stories about these beautiful creatures. I have been able to put some of my hate and anger towards Vick and his co-defendents asside. I never even knew that I could "hate" another human being. I try to see us all as having weakness and some vice. I now know what hate feels like. If Vick were ever to play football again I would picket the team that signs him even if I had to take time off from work and fly there. 23 months in a federal prison with drug treatment in a cushie ride for him. Hope his future is filled with the same lifetime of pain, suffering and scarring that he inflicted upon these poor innocent, beautiful, loving animals.Vick denies killing, maiming or hurting these animals. I guess they are the lucky ones. Just "dogs" a life is a precious thing. Look at what domestic animals provide to their keepers. It is a priceless sharing of love, compainionship, loyalty, protection, acceptance, etc....Thank you for sharing the pictures. I feel my personal suffering can finally start to heal. I have also learned, and am now educated, as well as my family, and co-workers, about dog fighting and for that, I would like to thank Mr. Vick.

Is it possible that these pictures would be shown to Michael Vick? Is it possible he would feel any pangs of regret?

i am so happy that these dogs are getting a second chance for a better life, everyone deserves that.they arent viciuos dogs at all, i have a pitbull too and she is the sweetest dog i ever have had.thank you for caring about them and being able to see that they deserve to be cared for,if you give anyone love theyll give you love bak, thats how it is with dogs.GOD created us all and he wants us to help each other, those creatures are so cute.

This is an awesome outcome for these dogs. I wish all dogs could be so lucky. As a resident of the State of Virginia, although I am glad to see that Michael Vick has been punished for his evil deeds, I am embarrassed that the judicial punishment that he received was so light. As morally wrong as it may be, I can not help but gloat on the fact that Mr. Vick's real punishment is his daily emotional struggles of coming to terms with knowing that he ruined himself.

I LOVE THE PICTURES THEY SPEAK SO MUCH LOUDER THEN WORDS. THE PICTURES MAKE ME REALIZE THAT THERE ARE STILL SOME GOOD PEOPLE LEFT IN THIS WORLD. THANKS FOR THE HOPE.

The crying shame of this is that Vick's dogs are only the tip of the iceberg in the dogfighting world. Shame on anyone who participates in the gruesome sport and maximum punishment to them all.

that is great news to see these dogs get some loving

that is just great to see thoses dogs get whats comming to them .
and that is love

thank you for looking after the dogs, your effort has make a huge different in their lives and i know for sure they're forever grateful, and so are all of us. thanks again

Im happy these dog arent gettting tortured by that sick ...(expletive deleted by management) ... anymore

vick i still love u and think u are great

If anyone still looks up to this man, Vick, they must be just as sick as him. It's appalling that someone would ever do this. I am so glad some of these dogs were rescued, and seeing these pictures put me at ease. Thank you and good luck.

that is so nice that people are taking their time to work with dogs.

About this blog
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a beta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin. She, Leo and Pumpkin live in Baltimore.
