Top Dogs: Bulldogs hit No.10

Bulldogadult.JPG The American Kennel Club today released its annual list of the country's most popular dog breeds -- and the biggest news was that Bulldog had muscled its way into the top 10.

Labrador Retrievers, for the 17th straight year, topped the list, which is based on the previous year's AKC registration figures.

"This is the first time the Bulldog has made it onto the top ten list since 1935,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “This breed appeals to a very wide range of dog lovers so it’s no surprise that it is a favorite amongst AKC’s 157 breeds. The Bulldog is both docile and adaptive, and can thrive in small or large homes. It’s an excellent all-around family pet.”

The Bulldog was first recognized by the AKC in 1886 – just two years after the organization’s founding – and was most popular in 1915 when it peaked in fifth place. The breed’s popularity ebbed and flowed throughout the mid-20th century, but since hitting a low of 41st place in 1973, its ranking has steadily increased.

Here are the AKC's top 10 dog breeds for 2007:

1. Labrador Retriever

2. Yorkshire Terrier

3. German Shepherd Dog

4. Golden Retriever

5. Beagle

6. Boxer

7. Dachshund

8. Poodle

9. Shih Tzu

10. Bulldog

Look at that face! What's not to love? I'm always happy to meet up with bulldogs in the Dawg Park. When they want to get to know you, they come up and lean on you, politely but very firmly, until you recognize their presence.

hmmmm.....my pooch isn't listed,...well actually he's not a pooch, but a little boy trapped in a cavalier king charles body...funny thing...every morning when i come downstairs, i turn on the light, and he stretches, yawns, looks at me and says..."hey, how'd you sleep?"

he should have been listed

great news. number nine is better than none.
once you see a shih tzu, no other dog will do.

My Boston Terrier would like to know how in the world he did not make it onto that list.

Aww... Dog in pic looks just like my little baby. I'm so glad the Bulldog made it...they're fantastic, but I hope people do their research before they consider getting a Bulldog!

Breeds, schmeeds.

Why would anyone want a purebred when you can get a beautiful mutt from a shelter with many great traits, with better health, and without any danger of supporting a puppy mill?

THIS IS ADORABLE!

If you check the AKC website, you can find most popular dogs by city. This might explain why a breed looks so popular in one region and yet did not make the list nationwide:-)

English Bulldog puppies have to be some the cutest pups, One thing to remember when you own a bully, You dont own them, they own you!

Docile? I've had bullies all my life and the last word I'd use to describe them is docile. Tenacious and devoted? Yes. Assertive? Demanding? Yes. They're also one of the best companions anyone could ever hope for.

Suuuuuuuuch CUUUUITER

Bulldogs are SO SO SO SO and on cute!!!! PLEASE have bulldogs be nuber 1 they ROCK!!!! I have an eglish Bulldog they do not sleep all day they can get active too. When you go to sleep they go to sleep. When you won't to play with them they might play with you!!!! My little Bulldog loves to play, She is wonderfull so you should help get it to be number 1!!!!

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
