Michael Vick's Thanksgiving
Michael Vick and the other inmates at the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Va., enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, stuffing, rice, cranberry sauce and sweet potato pie – but observers doubt that the fine holiday meal was what led the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback to turn himself in before his sentencing.
Vick, who is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 10 on charges related to his involvement in a dog fighting ring, reported to the prison Monday – about three weeks early.
Vick (shown at the right in an AP photo)pleaded guilty in August to a federal dog fighting conspiracy charge, and his attorney said his early appearance at the jail was further proof of his remorse and repentance.
"From the beginning, Mr. Vick has accepted responsibility for his actions, and his self-surrender further demonstrates that acceptance," attorney Billy Martin said in a statement.
Federal prosecutors are asking U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson to order Vick to pay $1 million in restitution from so that the 50 pit bulls seized from the dog fighting operation can be properly cared for.
Vick, who has is reportedly having financial troubles and has put his Atlanta home on the market for $4.5 million, might still have some things for which to be thankful this Thanksgiving: The maximum sentence he faces is five years.
In Houston County, Ala., earlier this month, Judge Ed Jackson handed dogfighter Johnny Ray Lewis – arrested in 2005, when authorities uncovered 17 injured and scarred dogs on his property. -- a 102-year prison sentence, according to the Dothan Eagle.
While there was speculation that the public's strong reaction to Vick’s case played a role in that lengthy sentence, the Humane Society of the United States says stiff sentences for dogfighting were popping up in the South way before authorities nabbed Vick.
In November 2004, South Carolina dogfighter David Tant received a then-record, 30-year jail term for dogfighting and related crimes. In 2005, Walter T. Ware was sentenced to 40 years in jail for dogfighting and possession of drugs to enhance the dogs' fighting ability.
Of course, you can't help but wonder if the sentences those low-level dog fighters (not to mention low-lifes) received might have been lighter had they the means to pay a $1 million fine, and whether Vick's ability to do so will translate into a sentence lighter than the five-year max.

just wanted to let vick know i am praying for him, i understand what has happen, he does this from youth, really no harm intended, i believe vick is a good man,
my Question to the world is why we get all upset over his actions, when 4500 babies , being killed through abortion in this land every day, and no one is upset at that.. we have a problem....
respectfully, richard from dallas,tx

Michael Vick deserves every minute of jail time he receives. When originally charged, he denied any knowledge of dogfighting taking place on his premises. Now his lawyer claims he accepted responsibility from the beginning. His lawyer should be thrown in the dog pit along with Vick.

I have to agree with the sentiment of Richard from Dallas on abortion. It is literally millions of babies never allowed to live since Roe vs Wade took affect. These were just dogs.
Beyond that, there is a disproportionate severity in the sentencing of a person for cruelty to animals and murder in many cases. Certainly every murderer is not walking away from prison in a few years, nor is every dogfighter going down for the count. However, it should never happen that taking the life of a human is less expensive, in terms of time served, than taking the life of any animal in any way.

I hope that after this is all over, Vick has a chance to play football again. Just like any other person who commits a crime, he will do his time & deserves a second chance. I want to see him on the football field again & this time be careful about the fols that you have around you. No one has said any thing about his family, like his parents, kids or spouse, my prayers are with them as they go through this with him. I hope they have a good support system around them. keep yur heads up, this is just a tempoary setback in life. Vick you will rise above this & come back stronger than ever.

Enough is ENOUGH! While I deplore the actions of Mr Vick, I think we've crucified this man enough already. Let him do his time and get on with his life!

Wow, im from Vancouver Canada, and I swear, hearing all of you ridiculous American's comments makes me sick. You think that this man's football career is more important than a life form. "We are praying for you" blah blah blah, Vick should be thrown into the dog pit for his actions. Yes abortion occurrs, but the law allows that, saying that "its just dogs" is not an excuse. 5 year sentance is pitiful he should be locked up for much longer and never allowed back into the NFL. He's an awful man that should really pay for his actions. Using an excuse that he "did this since youth" makes no exception. Who cares that he did this for youth, who cares that hes a pro football player, hes a mennance and shouldn't be prayed for by anyone, he's getting what he deserves and I hope someone takes advantage of him while hes in jail.

Vick deserves the full five years. His ability to play football has no bearing on the case. It is a cruel, senseless, and incredibly stupid atrocity that he has done. There are no excuses. He should be made to fight in the pit with his dogs.

The man has not been nearly crucified enough in the eyes of many dog-lovers. Five years is a good length sentence; never ever allow him to own an animal again or he violates any probation, pays huge fines and returns to jail. Keep abortion out of this - prevents those mothers from abusing children who will abuse pets which will never end the cycle of people abusing animals and ultimately seeing nothing wrong with their "fighting" for sick and twisted entertainment.
Posted by: BT | November 25, 2007 9:51 AM
Let him do his time..and get on with his life. Lets limit the pets from now on okay? THIS guy has cold blood. He has sloppy impulse control, and according to daddy always has. I believe it. But let him fulfill his legal obligations and get on with it. Just keep the creep out of MY neighborhood. I'm overwhelmingly tired of hearing about it already.

Good grief! For those of you who are somehow mixing up dog fighting and abortion in the same response, I'd like to offer a clue. Here it is. C-L-U-E: Folks, it's not just about the dogfighting. The torture of animals is just the tip of the iceberg. It's only the main course at a banquet of crime and immorality that includes illegal drugs, gambling, illegal firearms, and a host of other unwholesome activities, most of which will eventually hit YOU where YOU live. Ask any halfway decent cop in any city where there's a dogfighting problem, and he'll tell you. Breaking up a dogfight is a pleasure. Not only do the police get to stop the torture, but they get more bang for the bust, as it were. They can take care of the dogfighters, put a stop to some illegal gambling, get rid of a some illegal firearms, round up a bunch of narcotics and narcotics dealers--it's all happening right there at your friendly local dogfight. And don't forget: Children are almost always among the invited guests at these events. Just a bit of sporting fun with dear old Dad. Never forget that the people who initially raided that house on Moonlight Road weren't looking for dogs. They were looking for narcotics. The war against crime and for the preservation of our cities needs to be waged on many fronts. It's absolutely absurd to believe that one effort detracts from the others.

I kill a deer and they say, "It's okay b/c if not they will be over populated." I can have an abortion and they say, The choice is yours." I can hunt rabbits and squirrels and that's okay b/c we need that for a meal. You have a man who killed someone and he gets suspended for a couple of games and nothing else is done about it. You have another player get involve in a shot out and nothing is done about it. We have a hockey player who kills his best friend b/c he was drunk driving or driving too fast and you haven't heard anything else about him and as a matte of fact, he is still playing. Vick kill dogs and some of you want his head on a plater. Now what Vick did was wrong but it is a sad day in America when a animals life becomes more important than a humans life. The hurting part about this to me is when I see the same people who were cheering for him and praising him on the field, talking so highly about him now stands together and say CRUCIFY HIM, TAKE EVERYTHING AWAY AND PUT HIM UNDER THE JAIL. If the truth be told, Vick isn't the only one who have done this. As a matter of fact, the bible say, he without sin let him cast the first stone. If you've never done anything wrong on your life then go ahead and voice your oppinion. Everybody has made terrible mistakes in their lives one time or another and if God forgave you (even if America don't know about it) then I say forgive him and lets move on.
And I want to say to all these critics, don't forget that this is still someone else child and if you have one, yours could very well end up in a situation where he/she will need someone to have mercy on them so it is very wise of you all to stop casting stones and forgive and move on. It is Vick and his family going through this today, but tomorrow is surley to come and it could very well be you (with all your negative thinking and suggestions). Vick, we are praying for you and I promise you that God is the only one you need to be worrying about. If you got things right with Him then that's all that matter.

Pit Bulls are bred for this sort of thing, and dog-fighting is a cultural thing. It's not up to us white puritanical bible-thumpers to decide his fate, Our morals do not crossover to the Blacks, they have thier own morality and cultural norms. It's unsettling to our wimpy Christians to hear about it, but come on, pitbulls are trained to fight and kill, just like your mama.

I think Vick should NOT be sentenced. Because I feel it is his dogs and he should have the freedom to do what ever he wants to do with them. HE bought the dogs, and should be able to do what he wants to do with them. Let the Man return to playing foorball.
YALL NEED TO STOP HATING ON VICK

I think that Michael Vick is guilty, but in saying that I must say that Vick is not the First Person to do this type of thing and he will most definitely not be the last to fight dogs. I also think that all you people that say lock him in jail and throw away the key are a plethora of hypocrites, because how many of you have never had a slip up in your life, or done something you regret. Should you also be locked up in jail and get millions of people hating on you. A huge example are drugs, should all the teenagers that try marijuana get thrown in jail and get hated on. Sure Vick should be punished, but he should be punished by the authorities not by all you people that think that you better than eveybody else. I personally wear my #7 Michael Vick jersey proudly, I dont care how many people look at me cross-eyed, how many times I get flipped off, or how many times I get called a dog hater, because I know were I stand and im not going to be like the rest of you that just go along with what the rest of the world says.
So to Michael Vick if he ever reads this:
I SUPPORT YOU ALL THE WAY, NO MATTER WHAT, AND I DONT CARE WHAT ALL THESE HYPOCRITES SAY ABOUT ME.

Vick is getting what he deserves. How can anyone hurt a defenseless creature? Someone should do the same to him and he can see what if feels like. I see no excuse for such abuse he committed with those poor dogs. Now if we can only go after ALL those who like dog-fighting! All those who own and fight dogs are miserable, ignorant, low lifes. I guess their brains do not work that well!!!! HaHaHA!

Hang Him!!! Hell, he hung the dogs did he not? The problem starts with his parents, then the system, then the money, let`s also question Mr. Vicks intelligence??? Might run real fast....but, not out of the way! This is not a "cream of the crop human being". aww forget hanging him, shoot him, no great loss to the planet earth. There will be a lot more dogs enjoying the holidays with Vick in Prison. Merry Christmas Mike.

To Drewin,
Pitbulls were not, "made for this". You are confused. Can you understand they came into the world in the manner which most canines do. Where you are confused, is by the fact that sick evil people have trained them for this. They torture these puppies until they are mean. So, Drewin, ask youself, "what were canines made for?" Gosh, that's a totally different q&a don't ya think. One thing you are missing is that the Am Staff Pit Bull is but one breed of a whole species called,"canines" I think your statement would be similar to perhaps, me writing, your made to write assinine posts online. You see, while that was not the entire reason for you existance. You became that A******?

Vick is an animal, and why would we expect anything less from it. It is not entertaining to us humans anymore. Vick has a lot of high quality meat on its body and that could be ground up and feed to these poor dogs which of course are more evolved and civilized than this overgrown hind leg walking chimp. Let's do something usefull with this primates carcuss. Thanks!

THAT,S ONE OF THE BEST FOOTBALL HANDLERS IN THE WORLD IF WE DON,T SEE HIM AS A FALCON AGAIN IN MY HEART HE WILL ALWAYS BE "VICK & THA FALCONS" FOREVER!!! WE LOVE YOU MIKE.

Mickael Vick gets 23 months prison sentence while former Clinton National Security Advisor Sandy "Burglar" Berger gets probation and a fine for mishandling and stealing documents from the National Archives. Talk about a "double standard"--the guy stealing national security documents gets no prison time but a sports quarterback gets nearly 2 years for taking part in dog fighting while we do business with countries that put dogs on their menus (e.g., Philippines, China, South Korea, etc.)!! Whst's even more scary is most folks who read this probably don't even know who "Sandy Berger" is nor that he received probation for stealing documents from the National Archives, but they can condemn Michael Vick that's for sure.

Michael Vick. Another black man has been sacrificed for a "cause". Who will be next? Blacks should boycott Nike. Nike withdrew its endorsement of Vick when suspicon arose. They did not bother to wait. A web site "Campaign to Sack Michael Vick put pressure upon them. Why don't you visit their website and see fo yourself? They spell out their agenda. Their desire was to get Vick removed from the Falcon team. They were successful. Their desire was to force Vick endorsers to withdraw their endorsements. They were successful. Another stated desire is to pressure the NFL to sack Vick from the NFL. Will they be successful? My response is they have been sucessful to date. Only time wil tell. Blacks should Boycott Nike. We endorse them by buying their products. Its time to withdraw our endorsement.l

"From the beginning" Michael Vick denied any involvment in these horrible crimes. Only when the evidence and eye witness accounts were too much to refute did Vick admit to some form of involvement. His "self surrender" does not prove "accecptance"of his actions. Let's think this through, shall we? By turning himself in early who stands to gain from this action. You guessed it Michael Vick. By going in early it shortens the time that he will be unavailable to play football. This action in and of itself shows no remorse. He will be attending drug treatment while in prison. This 'act of good faith' will no doubt further reduce his sentance. These actions benifit only the already arrogant self serving Vick. He was orderd to pay a million dollar fine in order to care for the 50 dogs seized. those are some pretty wealthy dogs but this money was not offered by Vick. A public figure and role model that had the means and who was to truely display remorse would have volenteered his time to an establihment that cares for dogs that are victims of this particular brand of abuse. There are several of these across the country that would be happy to have an extra pair of hands. Maybe if Mr. Vick would paritcipate(volentarily with no court order) in helping one of these organizations he would truley realize the error of his actions. I was raised not far from Mr. Vick and I am ashamed that this behavior came is associated with my community.AND FINALLY. To the people compairing this with abortion- Doesn't the god that you worship command that you show all creatures respect. How could you say that "they are just dogs". AND last but not least to the person that said everone on here is a hippocrite and that you support Vick no matter what. Yes, I have done some things in my life that I am not proud of. I have made some mistakes but none of them involved the tourturing of innocent dogs or people or anything else for that matter. I suppose that you may like your role models to be inhumane drug addicted liars but I just can't see looking past that many flaws just because someone can throw a ball.

I know Michael is doing some animal rescue volunteering. Not to say that isn't good, certainly as an animal volunteer - for 17 yrs now - I know that is important. But what about his giving some of his future earnings to dog rescues - say 10% for the next 10 years (at least). That would really help a lot of rescues with their medical and boarding costs. I just don't think some fines and 16 mos in jail is enough - especially given the fact that he is being "allowed" back into professional football (that decision being questionable).
