Ellen and Iggy - A search for closure

While it's done wonders for my blog -- drawing in a record number of readers and comments -- I would nevertheless like to see some closure in this whole Ellen-Iggy mess.

That way, the world could move on to slightly more important things, like global warming, the presidential election, or fixing a child welfare system that regularly messes things up for children far worse than Iggy has been messed with.

Of all the comments from readers, here is the one l liked best. It came from a Fred, via hotmail:

"Take it to Judge Judy! Emergency show. Prime Time. Proceeds to animal shelters."

Think about it. It could be a serial -- running for five nights, leading up to Judge Judy's binding verdict. We could hear all the testimony. Watch all the tears. And a portion of the mega-advertising revenue it would generate could go to shelters or humane societies.

Most important, we'd all have closure -- Iggy included.

As far as it creating a "carnival atmosphere," no worries.

Like global warming, it's already here.

As someone who has worked with pet rescue for years, this Iggy saga has done incredibly what we all have worked to do:

It has put the plight of dogs that are bred like cattle in the most deplorable conditions on the front burner! Never have I seen such repeat coverage from the various networks on the story of puppymills!

I agree, take it to Judge Judy in primetime!!!! Tell the story to the world!!!
Take the proposal to the networks!!!!

If we operated our child-welfare system with the same zeal and energy as that poured into pet adoption and rescue, we'd have a lot fewer problems and more happy children. Despite the occasional zealot or busybody, most people working in animal rescue are dedicated, concerned, and interested. They're working for love rather than as bureaucratic functionaries.

Iggy or no Iggy, the bottom line is this: When you rescue a pet, you save a life and you make a friend for life.

I have no clue what happened today. i like Ellen, but this is pathetic. She needs to expend her energy and tears on beloved doggies waiting in line at the pound..for the pink shot of death.as they lick the hand, and wag their little tails, Ellen and Ruby need to go the local pound, stand outside the door of death.....adopt the NEXT......sweetie. i am repulsed by Ellen

Not only should she not have the dog, but they should kep her away from children also.... I hope she doesnt ever get that dog back just so she knows that the world doesnt revolve around her gay nasty ass....

I agree that Ellen made mistakes, but I have seen interviews with a few other customers of "Mutts and Moms" and video in which the police tell Ms. Baktis that (in effect) they don't understand why she is taking the dog. It appears that the so-called adoptive families are only renting the dogs because the rescue agency owns the dogs "in perpetuity". In other words, the overly emotional and under-sensible doglovers who run the agency (and I am judging by the fact that Ms. Baktis has snatched dogs from others who merely failed to walk an adopted dog on a leash) can traumatize dog and adoptive family any time their peculiar notions of proper care are violated. That alone would make me think three times about getting a pet from any private agency like that one. I would never subject my family - or any animal I loved - to vagaries of a well-intentioned but slightly hysterical amateur.

The elements in this situation do not provide justification for the out come.
Ellen signed a "contract?" or "Agreement?".. In this situation I would anticipate that if it is a legal binding agreement or contract that was voided, then it should have gone to the courts for action. That is not the case, these pet rescue owners went to a Residence, using false statements gained entry into this home, they ran amuck, grabbed the dog, and ran from the residence and down the street. They were allowed to leave the residence with the dog by Police authority, only because the chip in the dog had not been transferred to its legal owner. The situation was between these rescue people and Ellen. Until a court issues a finding that Ellen is no longer the legal owner of this dog, then the dog legally belongs to Ellen. Period..

Its really sad that I have to say what should be obvious to everyone. Ellen intends to shut down a rescue group. Why? Because she doesn't care about dogs. She KNEW these women would be threatened- she doesn't care if their home is burned down, their business is ruined or their lives murdered by one of her insane groupies. She is selfish.

Lets start at square one. Ellen had the dog for TWO weeks ONLY. She failed to buy a baby gate and work with the dog and instead DUMPED it on the first person who asked for it.

This is the SECOND dog they adopted from M&M. They returned the last dog, they knew the contract and understood it.

The adoption group tried to work with the family- was even willing to bend the rules if it was a good home environment. The family REFUSED and when the rescue group came out to met them, the mother tried to PHYSICALLY HARM the rescue worker. The daughter Ruby is on tape saying "Its a good thing I am here or else mommy would hit her" I wonder what else mommy hits in her free time.

Contracts are there to protect the dog from going from home to home only to end up in a shelter again. Dogs are not a handbag or a piece of jewelry. They are alive and they HAVE RIGHTS. The right to NOT be passed around, the right to a safe environment.

Ellen also knows less people will adopt from rescue groups because of her pretend sob story. She doesn't care if dogs die because of her actions. She had DUMPED many dogs in the past two years.

The only mistake M&M made was ever adopting to Ellen in the first place.

I hope Ellen never gets another dog. She appears to have a habit of lying to people to get their dogs, promising to give the dog a home, then she discards the dog. If I was out with my dog and saw Ellen coming, I'd turn and run the other way. I wouldn't even want her to pet my dog.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
