Clean the Bread & Cheese!

Who knew there was a creek in the Baltimore area with the savory-sounding name Bread and Cheese?

Well, there is, sure enough, in Dundalk. Unfortunately, as the photo above shows, this tributary of Back River and the Chesapeake Bay could use some help looking more appetizing.

There's a stream cleanup planned between Merritt Boulevard and Plainfield Road on Saturday, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Baltimore County is providing dumpsters and some gloves and hand tools, and area businesses have pledged water and snacks. All that's needed are volunteers like you, willing to wade in and reclaim a stream from bottles, bags, shopping carts, concrete blocks and assorted other human flotsam.

If you want to pitch in, wear boots or tennis shoes you don't mind getting a little wet. Long pants, gloves, hat, sunscreen and insect repellant also are recommended. A few more rakes, shovels, saws and axes wouldn't hurt, either. Nor would wheelbarrows or wagons.

To get there, go to Merritt Boulevard, turn on to German Hill Road headed east, then turn left (North) onto Plainfield Road. At the bottom of the hill you will see the three large dumpsters. Parking is available on the street or in a parking lot at the top of German Hill Road.

For more information, contact the cleanup's organizer, creekside resident John Long at (410) 285-1202 or Clean_Bread_And_Cheese_Creek@yahoo.com  And for more on the stream, go here.

It would be helpful to identify the date on which the clean up is happening. I am reading this on Sunday, 9/13/09, on oline. There is no published date. It is of interest to me but if I missed it, I can't tell...thx

TW: It was posted Friday, Sept. 11, and the cleanup was Saturday. When more than one item is posted on a given date, you'll find them all time-stamped under that date. But I agree it's not always easy to find the date. John Long told me he hopes to organize a cleanup later of another stretch of the creek, so feel free to contact him if you're interested.

We will be continuing our clean up of Bread And Cheese Creek on Saturday, April 10th at 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Rain or Shine, as the day and time we clean up the stream in the section between Plainfield Road Bridge and Old North Point Road . ANY time you can give to helping us out is more then appreciated. We are continuing the work we started in September 2009 with this section since it has many elderly residents along the stream who are not capable doing it themselves. This is not only the right thing to do by assisting these elderly people, but makes the project eligible to utilize the resources of the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Resources Management.

Remember, there will be plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to work the grills as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. As my grandfather always said, “Many hands makes the work light”

We had a great start to getting the stream cleaned up this year and I am sure we can continue with our momentum in 2010!
