TV that might turn you green: ABC's "Earth 2100"

ABC broadcasts a special at 9 p.m. Tuesday that forecasts a bleak - make that no - future for civilization by the next century unless we somehow curb population growth, resource depletion and climate change.

In "Earth 2100," ABC says correspondent Bob Woodruff talks with a series of experts to draw up what is admittedly a worst-case scenario, given current trends.

Among those interviewed is John Holdren, science advisor to President Obama. According to ABC, he tells Woodruff: "If we continue on the business as usual trajectory, there will be a tipping point that we cannot avert. We will indeed drive the car over the cliff."

I haven't had the opportunity to screen this special in advance, so have no insights to offer. Watch - or ignore it - at your own risk.  To learn more about it, go here.

bull

i wonder if its gonna be good it just started...

i just hope that people would have taked this more seriously a long time ago

This is utter propaganda. There is no
counter point presented at any juncture! The green movement is resorting to extremists statements ignoring the
scientists who hold that the warming
trend has already been reversed!

Good points are the historical analogies of the Mayan Cultures demise due to draught and Easter Island due to over population.

I an anxious to see some professional rebutal to all that has been presented.

This is not a documentary by any stretch of the terms. it is just poorly written and produced science fiction at best.
Of course with an audience satisfied with the bread and circusses of reality TV, I guess it will go over big time with the under educated.

This show was the biggest piece of **** I have ever seen. All the commentators and personnel are involved in some way earning their living from the government (tax payer). It was shameless propaganda for non thinking sheeple. My TV is off for a very long time, thank God for Netflix

What a waste of air time. I am sick and tired of this **** trying to be forced onto us. We all know it's bull.

What shallow crap. You people are way behind the curve. It's cooling now . Global cooling. Scare us with the right stuff at least. We have met the enemy, and the enemy is you. If we are going to collapse, then let it happen naturally, not where a global government creates designer germs to kill the non-elite.

I have never been subject to such baseless propaganda in my life. What better way than to promote an agenda than by fear. Watch the cartoon and see just how awful, bad, and scary it will get, then tell the government to go ahead and spend their billions of a giant wall to protect New York...or whatever else they want. The utopia described at the end is just as much a thing of biased fiction as the doomsayer scenario that made up the gist of the program. I hope people are smarter than to allow such nonsense to persuade them either way.

What the hell is wrong with you people, if there is climate change, true or not i think its a better alternative.

This must have been written by a 5th grader from a hippie family, the kind I knew back in the 70's. Forget the barriers, there will be no flood. I hope you did not PAY for this script. Now that would be a crime.

There is no voice audio. I guess ABC could do a show on how to lose an audience of 30 million in 30 mins.

Interesting show as far as premise and production value.

Fear mongering? Well, certainly propagandist (and I agree with everything presented in it).

But something got in the way. The poor quality of the writing, (atrocious, really), defeated any message.

And really, can anyone imagine finding refuge from the West in...New York?

Reminded me of the show aired by one of the Big Three networks in the late1950s, not long after Sputnik put everyone in a panic. It was full of [then state-of-the art] simulations of Russian bombers annihilating the U.S. Parents were warned to send the kids to bed. Made as much sense as training the same kids to take cover under their wooden desks when the dreaded attack would actually occur...

Yes, much of the show is based on conjecture. How could it not be. But as a scientist, i believe it is a responsible thing to show what the current beliefs are considering the effects of ignorance. I like how people that live in denial can find a rogue scientist or two to
substantiate their claim. It is a scientific consensus that global warming is occuring, and that population will have a detemental effect on the future. Hopefully enough people will wake up to the fact. And if for some reason we are wrong, what is wrong with being responsible for the planet you live on in the first place?

We need to get involved, we call ourselves the super power but do nothing to address this potential situation. The government used scare tactics after 911 and an Iraq war was started because of them. I do not understand why now it is unreasonable to think about and consider the possible impact our society can have on the earth and our quality of life in the future. We need to be looking forward and problem solving instead of putting our heads in the sand and hoping none of this will happen.

I watched the show 'Earth 2100'. The funny thing about the show is when the Girl (Narrator) parents dies they decided to shift to New York from San Diego and mode of transportation they use 'Car'?!?! Still not thinking about Public Transportation??? Want to burn mode fuel.. Wake up!!

Joe - I'd like you to meet Phyllis, Phyllis Joe.

My gosh, all these people who are bad mouthing this show are the people causing the problem! Of course there will be consequences for us in the future we cannot just pollute and abuse everything around us with no repercussions! These things presented are scientific facts! We just all live as though everything is fine, we all struggle just to put food on the table and a roof over our heads, I think you complainers just have too much stress to deal with and don't want to admit you have the world coming closer to a 6th extinction to worry about also.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with encouraging awareness. What is wrong with taking care of our home now, as opposed to sitting around until something terrible happens as a result of our, I guess I should say, ignorance, or rather, our choice to ignore the possible affects of our indifference towards the way our actions, or lack of action, affects the environment? We shouldn’t wait to see if we will have to suffer consequences, we should take action now to prevent those consequences indefinitely, or at least reduce the risk substantially.

But the show was kind of lousy…

Propaganda at it's worst. Amazing how quickly we've gone from "global warming" to "climate change" - meaning 'we don't know what it's going to do, but it's going to something!'

Ever heard of the 4 seasons? That's "change.

Listen at everyone here. "Piece of Crap" Lies" "Rubbish". Pretty much the attittude that says "It'll never happen to me then". Such arrogance.

I was very disappointed in the show and turned it off before the second half. I recognized all the people coming on the screen and voicelessly yammering at us, and recognized all of the background scenes - but invasion of dragonflies?! - gimme a break!. If it hadn't been for the droning music all the way, I would have thought there was something wrong with the sound on my TV. I would have been impressed with visions of the pristine mountains of the past that are now bulldozed to nothing for the coal, and other such comparing of half a century ago and now. I'd had high hopes at the beginning. Those hopes were quickly dashed.

I understand that the program may have been showing everything in a worse case scenario, but I don't think it takes a brain surgeon to look around the world and see the overcrowding and pollution created by people and the confirmation by informed, educated experts about global warning. Its sort of sad to see some of comments from those that are most probably afraid of the change that will come and in their denial with angry retoric. I think the most important idea the program portrayed is that there will never be a concensus to find solutions. Look at the responses from people.

Something like Earth 2100 was needed about 30 years ago, but understanding the scientific projections was too difficult for most people and too threatening for the business leaders who own polluting industries. That combination of scientific illiteracy and manipulation of opinion by polluting industries accounts for those who deny reality. Their denial simply means they refuse to help make the effort to address global warming, and that's why it is not being effectively addressed, which is already resulting in the worst-case scenario depicted in the film.

Here's a good solution for those who think global warming is rubbish. Make a website - call it "Why I did nothing about Global Warming" - and then sign your name (truthfully) with some comments. A lot will happen in 10 years... if there's no GW, then you can have the biggest bragging rights in history! But if you're wrong... wait, I guess there's no such thing as shame anymore.

Look, both of our most recent administrations have acknowledged the science, the Pentagon officially put global warming as a security risk in 2006, and you will hear more and more about this topic from now on. It's a huge economic opportunity, plus cutting down on our power consumption leads to a healthier lifestyle and a better planet for our kids.

Nice Science Fiction story line!
I watched a Science Documentary the same night this Earth 2021 aired, called "How the Earth was Made" It was MUCH more frightening than the ABC "greenie" propaganda. It showed how extremely violent our Earth can be and HAS been at regular intervals. It will eventually wipe out nearly all lfe on our Planet, for the 5th time! We ain't gonna' make it! Our Earth is much more dangerous to us, than we are to it.
Mankind's activities are NOT a factor in Earth's natural, violent upheavals. The Earth couldn't care less about our SUVs and our burning of fossil fuels.
We are simply punishing ourselves for no apparent reason!
We could pack up all our stuff and move to Mars and look back at Earth and watch it CONTINUE to go through it's extremely violent, deadly cycles. These "greenie" idiots are a bunch of Science-Illiterate numbskulls! Don't they ever crack a REAL Science Book? A ten-year-old, with Earth Science 101 under his belt, could make Al Gore and the SS Gestapo EPA sit down and shut up! These felons are after your wallet and they want to control your activities!
Ever heard about the "Mid-Ocean Ridge?" It is a huge crack in the Earth's crust that resembles a seam on a baseball. It is 40,000 miles long! It has violent volcanic activity along it's entire 40,000 mile length. That baby spews MORE volatile, toxic gasses into Earth's atmosphere in an hour, than mankind has in our entire existence!!
Are the environMENTAL radicals "Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" Nope! Way, way dumber!
ABC should be prosecuted, by Child Protective Services, for scaring our little kids, with their outrageous propaganda B.S.!
Donald Johanssen's "Lucy?" She was part ape and part human! What does this tell us? Hmmm? Read about it.

Everything that Tom says is true. The mal-education of our children starting back in the 80's when congress allowed educators to intermix environmental subjects in the classroom is what has caused too many people to believe in this global warming scam. In fact, if you still believe all this is going to happen, rest your mind by watching a 76 minute video made by scientists in the UK and released in 2007 entitled "The Great Global Warming Swindle". Do a search on google and it will come up.

Also read the book "Red Hot Lies" by Chris Horner published in 2008 and you will be astounded at what lengths the creators of this nonsense will go to to demonize "deniers". A former member of greenpeace, he quit when he saw all the lying going on. The polar bears are not dying, ditto the penguins (a recent phony phenomen), the polar caps are doing just what they have been doing for millions of years of history determined by ice and earth core samples. One commenter said, which is true, the earth has been cooling for the last 10 years.

But Horner documents in the book how drastically fearful the believers are, many of whom make a living out of this propagating this hoax, by attacking verbally and even with threats to be tried for being a criminal for just having the audacity to disagree, as I do.

Remember the coming ice age in 70's? I believed it because in southern Michigan where I lived we went for 2-3 weeks with temps below zero. A couple years later I was digging horseradish in January. It was the same maneuver, get people scared and get some money, too. There was even a proposal to cover the polar areas with coal dust to cause melting that would stop this horrible change coming at us

Please, watch the video and read the book by Horner.

Just 3 points...

1. In the 15th century the consensus of scientists was that the sun went around the earth.....consensus does not equal truth

2. A recent TV show tried to alarm people by stating that the ice in Greenland had receded so far that medieval Viking villages and farms were being uncovered.....didn't seem to mention that these people were living quite happily during a globally warm period. That of course is an inconvenient truth that is glossed over.

3. The whole global warming scare is based on what has been published in peer reviewed journals. Peer review is a process that is only as good as the peers who are doing the reviewing.

One such paper "proved" that man-made global warming was happening because temperatures in the southern hemisphere were driving temperatures in the northern. Since the most industrialised countries are in the northern hemisphere should it not be the other way around?

I am a scientist and I remain a sceptic!
