Gardeners needed at Annapolis shelter

Starbucks in Annapolis is looking for volunteers to help plant the gardens around the new Light House Shelter, built to temporarily house homeless individuals and families.
Starbucks is providing all the plant material, but volunteers are needed to do the digging on Tuesday between 10 and 2 p.m. at the shelter on Hudson Street in the city.
The service project is being supported by all the Starbucks in the Annapolis district and is part of a corporate initiative for community service in April.
Tools will also be provided by Starbucks.
And -- just guessing here -- coffee.

Wouldn't it make sense for the people staying in the shelter to do the gardening or otherwise add value by contributing other basic services?
Nick, many of the residents of the shelter work, and the children go to school. And I am not sure it would add to the dignity of their situation to require that they garden. Besides, Starbucks was looking for a way to give back to the community. -- Susan

What a great idea! Is this just flowers or veggies too? Wouldn't it be great if they can raise some of the food (using the Square Foot Gardening method) that the residents would use? And wouldn't it be a fun activity for the parents & children on the weekends?
Kim, I am pretty sure it is just the formal plantings in front of the house. But you are right. What a terrific idea to do square-foot gardening for fresh veggies for the residents. You should volunteer to teach it!!! -- Susan
