White House vegetable garden: plot thickens

White House vegetable garden
Here is a look at White House plans for Michelle Obama's 2011 vegetable garden, planted earlier this month with the help of local school children.

Notice that most of the crops are early spring crops. They will no doubt be replaced by summer crops in late May or June.

What goes into the "Thomas Jefferson bed"--any ideas?

If I remember correctly, the garden is a tribute to Thomas Jefferson and includes vegetables that he favored for his gardens at Montecello. -- Susan

Well then, who are The Three Sisters and what is planted in their bed?

The Three Sisters! I think I know. Comes from an American Indian tradition. It's an interplanting system. Corn is one sister, growing tall. Beans are the 2nd Sister, and they will grow up and around the corn stalks. And Squash is the 3rd sister, growing on the ground around the corn, keeping weeds at bay.

iYou got it! That's exactly right!!!! -- Susan

Cool, Stephen!

what about strawberries?

I am pretty sure the garden plan shows a spot for berries. And don't forget the bee hive! Dessert anyone? -- Susan

Tomatoes? Where are the tomatoes???

You are looking at a plan for spring crops! Tomatoes, peppers and such come later! -- Susan

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
