Wordless Wednesday: The last camellia show

Camellias by Baltimore Sun photographer Amy Davis

As gardener Bruce Hornstein prepares to relocate from his Monkton home later this fall, his camellias, from hybridizer William Ackerman, put on a big farewell show.

When we moved to Houston in 1976 - my kids were 3 mos and 3 years - I planted a scrawny camellia bush next to the front door of our brand new house. Christmas was hard. It was very warm. Christmas trees were very expensive and really ugly because the local sellers sprayed about 2 inches of fake snow (they called it "flocking") all over them. Santa Claus wore red shorts. In the midst of Jersey Girl blues, my camellia bloomed on Christmas Eve.
OMG. What a sweet story! -- Susan

Aww, Eve-beautiful story! I remember "flocked" trees from growing up in California--I hated them, too.
Hope you are counting many blessings this Thanksgiving. You, too, Susan. I am with family and busy counting all I have to be grateful for.
It is a wonderful holiday, Dahlink. Joseph is home from the war and with his pregnant bride in San Diego. We will only see him on Skype, but somehow that is all OK with us! -- Susan

Wow, what gorgeous camellias--anyone know exactly which camellias these are exactly?
What a heart-rending goodbye. How beautiful, quiet, mixing blooms with the sadness of departure from a garden.

Agreed, Sandura. And I am sorry to say I don't know camellias well enough to identify them! Anybody out there? -- Susan

I can't help with the camellia ID, but I'm happy for your family news, Susan. You will be a great grandmother, I'm sure!
I'd settle for being a good grandma! -- Susan
