Newsflash! Newspapers in gardens

Anne Raver, Maryland resident and garden writer for the New York Times, writes this week about using newspapers to hold down weeds in the garden -- an old idea to which she gives some new twists.

Yet another good reason to subscribe to newspapers!

Not many folks these days know about this. However, as more people become more environmentally responsible, methods like this are replacing chemicals and synthetic fabrics.

For some, it's hard to imagine that a few layers of newspaper will help stop weeds as well as add substance to the soil. But it does work surprisingly well.

From a professional standpoint, it's not a practical or realistic solution. However, for the home gardener and do it yourself landscaper willing to replenish it every year, it can be a practical and economical alternative to other methods.

100% wonderful method to control weeds or to rid one's yard of lawncare in order to plant groundcover. Using cardboard or plastic cover works as well.

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
