A BRIGHT, sunshiny day!

That's our Jed! -- Susan

GrandBoy's & my sunflowers are just in bud this morning. Only 2 of our plants survived the dog and whatever other goings-on seem to be happening in the back of the garden when we're not home. They're not quite 6 feet tall, as opposed to the 12 feet the seed package claimed, but we look forward to the blooms.

We had a Yellow Swallowtail drifting through the yard between the Butterfly Bush and the Zinnias on Sunday. The dog tried to eat it. I had to pry his jaws open and banish him to the house. Last I saw of it, the butterfly was covered in dog slobber, flopping on the deck. I do not lure these creatures into my yard so that the dog can have hors d'oeuvres.

BAD dog!!! There is a neighhbor's cat that thinks my bird baths and bird feeders are his food court. -- Susan

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
