Anybody getting married? I swear I could do the flowers for a wedding from just ONE of my hydrangeas!

Why are they so profuse this season? Possibly because there was no late frost to kill off the buds. Maybe the winter snow provided the moisture they like so much. Not sure, but I'll take it!

I wish mine were near blooming but that doesnt happen until late July here. I cant plant enough hydrangeas. Love them!

Ours didn't bloom. My mother has been equally frustrated and devastated by the loss.....lol.

Tell her to stop by my house and take as many as she wants!!--Susan

Is it my imagination or are plants flowering earlier than usual? Walking the dog at 6 a.m. has (at least) one benefit, in that I can study the flora for several blocks around my house. I saw hostas in bloom this morning, which seemed too early.

My colleague Jacques Kelly says his garden is two weeks ahead of schedule...and I believe him. -- Susan

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
