Washington's Cherry Blossom Festival: gridlock

Cherry blossom festival

Garden Variety made a valiant attempt to see Washington's cherry blossoms while on vacation last week, but you can't see much stuck in traffic.

We never even got close. And it wasn't even the weekend!

Thank goodness for Baltimore Sun photographer Algerina Perna, who made it to the Tidal Basin and brings us these images.

The cherry blossoms around the lake in Druid Hill Park are just as lovely, and less crowded.

You are absolutely right! --Susan

You honestly thought you could drive down to that area? Okay, I live in PG County so I am well aware of the gridlock on this end of the State. However, I would always recommend to people to never attempt to drive into DC. It is too annoying. You want to drive to an outlying Metro station & go in from there.

I shoulda!--Susan

Working your way through the traffic and crowd to see the blossoms is still worth the effort. I saw the blossoms for the first time on April 3rd. It was crowded but everyone was in such a wonderful mood because of the gorgeous weather and the lovely blossoms.

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
