Hotel herb garden

Harbor Court Hotel Baltimore

Here's a first look at the herb garden planted this weekend on the 7th-floor terrace of Baltimore's Harbor Court Hotel on Light street.

The 600-square-foot herb garden consists of over 403 plants and 26 different varieties of herbs, edible flowers and tomatoes.

The hotel's culinary team isays that in a few months, customers will be dining on on herbs and vegetables harvested just a few minutes earlier as well as cocktails made with the freshest mint.

Stay tuned here on Garden Variety to see what the garden looks like when it is in full flower!

Hmmm--I am all for locally grown herbs, but I wonder how the air quality is there with so much traffic in that area.

Could be the herbs are above the volcanic ash zone!--Susan

The herb garden is fantastic. With the weather being kind in the last few weeks, the herbs are really starting to grow. We already started the harvesting of some of the herbs for the daily use in the kitchen. The tomato plants are coming along as well, with two tomatoes already on the vines.

To answer the question, the herb garden is on the 7th floor, and althought there is a lot of traffic in the area, not much dust is created onto the 7th floor. Also we have different types of shrubs that help protect the garden from the occasional strong winds.
When the herbs come to the kitchen, they get washed thoroughly before we start we the cooking process.

I encourage everyone to come for lunch and/or dinner and then take a tour of the garden. Who knows, maybe you take some herbs with you home.

Chef, we need pictures!!!! -- Susan

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
