Ball dropped on Baltimore Christmas tree pick-up?

Christmas tree recycling

Garden Variety is not pleased! Her journalistic reputation is at stake!

We printed the schedule for Christmas tree pick-ups in Baltimore City that came to us via a press release from the City Department of Public Works.

But we are hearing from Garden Variety readers that their trees did not go away with the regular trash. And they didn't go away on yard waste day, either.

What's up, City?

To find out why your tree isn't gone like 2009, we suggest calling the contacts on the press release: Celeste Amato at 410-545-6541 and Robert Murrow  at 410-545-6189.

Their email addresses are celeste.amato@baltimorecity..gov and robert.murrow@baltimorecity.gov.

Let us know what happens!

My tree went to the backyard last weekend, with the plan being to drag it around on Tuesday evening for Wednesday pickup. Frankly, it was too cold and too dark by the time I got home and dragged the trash can around and I didn't have it in me to mess with the tree. (For the record, the city does not want trash out before 6 a.m. of collection day and I won't burden y'all with how little I care about what the city does/does not want!)

However, many of my neighbors got their trees out on Tuesday evening, and those trees've just been rolling all up and down the street for the past 3 days! Based on past performance, I don't anticipate my neighbors dragging their trees....anywhere at all.

I put my tree out on Monday evening for my ordinary Tuesday trash pickup. When I got home Tuesday night, the trash was gone and my tree was still there. The next morning I filed a complaint on 311's Web site (I chose, "Missed mixed refuse pickup" as my complaint, and then typed in the open box that it was not trash but rather my Christmas tree that was not picked up) and by the time I got home from work Wednesday, the tree was gone. So, complaining to 311 is the key.

Thanks, KB...look for another post on this subject--Susan

311 for tree pickup seems like an inane waste of resources. Why can't the city just do its job?
I would have preferred to keep my tree up another week to enjoy it, but took it down early only to find that it wasn't picked up on either day.
Next year, I'll know better than to trust the city to make good on its promise.

They didnt pick up my tree as well, tried to reach Mr. Murrow but of course got his voicemail. I left the tree right next to my trash, just as the articel asked, and of course they only took my trash! Pathetic Baltimore City!

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
