Fall container gardens: WOW

Kerry Michaels, who writes about container gardening at about.com, has posted a stunning gallery of photos of fall containers and offers this advice:

Fall is a great time to experiment and have fun with container gardens. Try different colors and textures. Think about using perennials or trying out some cool looking, cold loving annuals in your containers.

Don't forget that a single plant in a wonderful pot can look stunning. Also, try grouping your containers and try using some pumpkins or decorative gourds to unify your design.

Take a look at her photo gallery. It is inspirational!

Susan, I love these photos--inspirational! What is the airy flower in the photo at top? I love old-fashioned pansies and their sweet faces, and this is a very striking combination.

Dahlink: I think you are referring to the LINARIA "ENCHANTMENT" , which has magenta and golden flowers that look like tiny snapdragons. They are surrounded by a buttercream-colored phlox and "Matrix Surprise" pansies.--Susan

Thanks, Susan!

Hey Susan - Thanks for the shout out. I love fall and fall containers - all the oranges and browns and great textures. I have wayyyy too much fun in the fall.

Where are you Kerry? And is fall there yet? Or has it been and gone?--Susan

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
