I have a pergola 15x15 and want to plant some climbing vines. I thought about wild grapes. What do you suggest?

Harold, you have lots of options:
If you're thinking perennials, there's sweet autumn clematis, among others; annual options include moonflower and morning glories; and you can always plant climbing hydrangeas or climbing roses.

But if you want something sprawling and edible, you have choices besides wild grapes -- any kind of pole bean will climb, although Susan suggested purple beans as a fun splash of color. You can also do cucumbers or even winter squashes and gourds.

I hope that helps!

Harold, you can also combine two ornamental plants for more interest. I've seen some stunning combinations of wisteria and climbing roses, for example.

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
