White House Kitchen Garden

Your tireless reporter here on Garden Variety just got a call from the White House.

I've been invited to be part of the pool of reporters who will cover First Lady Michelle Obama and her school children friends on Tuesday as they harvest the first fruits of her kitchen garden and prepare a healthy meal.

More than 30 years in the business and it is gardening that gets this newshen White House credentials. Whoda thought?

Food, shelter, clothing, and health care are the most important topics to be covered after all. It is not surprising that this topic garnishes so much attention.

I'm so glad you were invited. I feel like you are my representative to Washington. There are many things I'm curious about. Of course, I'd like to know what did well. But what were the biggest challenges? Soil conditions? Pests? Did they stay organic? Next, what does the summer garden look like -- what have they chosen to include? Who starts their seeds for them? Are they putting anything ino the ground now? What is being planned for a winter garden -- brussels sprouts?

What fun. Have a great time. Can't wait to hear.

Wow, Kathryn. That's a tall order. My guess is, I will be behind a rope line with a gaggle of reporters and photographers, shouting questions that maybe she answers but maybe she doesn't even hear! But I will do my best. Garden Variety it counting on me!

Well, I am very excited for you. Enjoy the day at the White House garden. I know Michelle Obama will be a very gracious hostess.

I think its silly that Mr Drudge would think that lettuce wouldn't grow that fast. My leaf lettuce planted in April from seed is that big, and my romaine lettuce I planted from transplants is already harvested. He should do a little investigation and look into harvest times for veggies before he jumps to conclusions.

I think it's great that veggie gardening is being featured on such a level.

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
