Gardening with Succulents
In today's gardening column in The Sun, I write about creating a container garden with succulents.
The appeal of these plants goes beyond their drought tolerance. The colors, the shapes and the textures rival anything in the garden.
If you are thinking about delving into gardening with succulents, let me recommend a book by Graham Charles, Cacti and Succulents: An illustrated guide to the plants and their cultivation.
With dozens of photos, as well as step-by-step instructions on cultivation, propagation and display, the book will help you decide which plants too pursue. And gardening centers such as Valley View Farms have dozens of varieties for sale as succulents get more attention in gardening magazines.

When you say, they provide fall and winter interest in the garden should I safely infer that succulents winter over?
Eve, succulents will winter over if you put them in the ground...it is less likely that they will in a pot....Susan

Can I plant succulents in an old car tire? Or does have to be a clay pot?
LOL! Sure. Give it a shot! They are pretty tough. Just make sure the soil mixture is right.

They are very beautiful. They are just right for our area. If they are in pots you can always take them into the house in the winter to be enjoyed all winter long. They can be put back outside in the spring.
