Plants I Want to Order
My friend Betsy has a fig tree in her backyard and it is a bountiful producer - if you can get to the figs before the birds do.
One solution might be to net the tree, but you'd have to be a lot taller than Betsy is.
Another solution might be to purchase this miniature fig tree, ficus carica 'Petite Negra.' At 2 to 3 feet tall, it is perfect for the patio or indoors, and it begins producing its lovely purple fruit when just a foot high.
It is available from Logee's for $17.95 and arrives in a 4-inch pot.
I am thinking right now of figs stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped with prosciutto. Yum.

Eve,
If you want some Joe Pye, you should come to my house.
I have both Joe Pye and "Little" Joe and they are both just this side of invasive.
Joe Pye is probably 7 feet tall and four plants are now about 104. Little Joe is planted along a fence and it is sending shoots into everything nearby. And it takes a spade with a sharp edge and a big foot to sever the roots and pull them out. I am NOT happy.

Now that is the way to grow figs. Inside the house works very well. It is nice to have lovely plants in the house as well. An indoor garden is wonderful.

Thanks for the heads up on Joe Pye. I'm already battling Trumpet Vine, so I think I'll pass on JP for now!

You can grow many different fig varieties in a pot and they'll produce figs fine. I don't recommend Petite Negra, once it gets to a certain size it stops growing since it's a dwarf variety.
I grow over 500 fig trees in pots.

We like figs on the grill topped with feta, but goat cheese and prosciutto sounds good, too!
