San Diego Sunshine

I am just back from a week in Southern California, in the foothills around San Diego, and it was a revelation.
Instead of the verdant landscape of Maryland in May, there were craggy, rocky and brown hills and mountains around us, often capped by the Sea Fog from the Pacific but, as often as not, baked by a bright sun.
My husband has a theory that, considering the earthquakes, mudslides and brushfires, everyone in California should be required to evacuate and the entire state should be declared a national park – with free admission.
From the redwoods and wine country in the north to the avocado farms and palm trees of the south, the flora in California is about 12 different kinds of beautiful.
There will be lots more pictures. Stay tuned.

All true. But as a transplanted California, I can truly say I much prefer having four seasons a year instead of just one!
You know? I agree. And I think the 'kids" miss the seasons, too.--Susan

As a lifelong San Diegan, I have to point out that those brown craggy hills are an acquired taste. With just a little exploration off the beaten track, they turn out to be wild, beautiful, and peaceful places to be. Right now they are filled with wildflowers and hidden swimming holes. Next time you are in San Diego, come in the winter and see how gorgeous our desert can be (and need I point out that it will be a gorgeous 60-70 degrees out as well?). For garden lovers, make sure to stop by our Water Conservation Garden in Jamul, Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, and both the zoo and Wild Animal Park which are both so diverse in flora that they are designated botanical gardens.
Cheers,
Kate
I will be back! And I toured the gardens at both the zoo and the Wild Animal Park. Wonderful!
