Ladies Night

It’s Ladies Night (Is that Kool and the Gang that I’m hearing?) at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

Events coordinator Stephanie Saarbach says there will be food tasting, wine tasting, jewelry, cosmetics and spa services – all from local purveyors – in an evening designed to pamper women customers.

In addition, Chesapeake Bay Roasting Co. will be on hand to serve cocktails made with coffee.

And there’s no cover charge for ladies (Just kidding. Events are free to everyone). Plus there is a 25 percent discount on purchases made between 6 and 8 p.m.

Above, check out a Sun staff video of Homestead Gardens annual spring show by Leeann Adams. The show runs through Sunday.

Homestead Gardens is pretty much the far end of the universe from my office, so at the end of this very long week, I won't get to this event. However, I encourage everyone nearer (or more energetic) than I to go.

I have only been to one event at HG. That was in the fall, several years ago when a friend was very ill and I was looking for something fun to take her to that wouldn't be too much. We drove down to HG's Fall/Halloween Festival. It was delightful. Lots of things going on and lots of flowers and outdoor things, but still places to sit and rest. Although I haven't been back - Davidsonville turned out to be further away than I would have believed! - I recommend Homestead Gardens and their events.

Eve, When I first moved to Anne Arundel County 27 years ago, Homestead was just a regular-sized nursery deep in the countryside of Davidsonville. It has exploded to be so much more. A true entertainment center -whether you like plants or not. I mean, llamas? What other garden center has llamas.

Well, they hadn't added the llamas when I was there. Chapel Hills Nursery in Perry Hall, while much, much smaller than Homestead, has a petting zoo/farm/area. They hold seasonal Events.

Since my idea of gardening is pretty much limited to repairing a divot after hitting a lovely lob wedge to the green, I wasn't sure I'd find much of interest on your blog. But since my idea of a great hobby (especially in these economic times) is to track down FREEbies, I'm delighted to learn about Homestead Garden's Ladies Night tomorrow - especially since I can combine the FREE cocktail you describe with a coupon from another newspaper (that expires tomorrow) for a FREE pansy plant in a 4" pot! Thanks, Susan, for giving me something to do on an otherwise FREE Friday evening!

And you can count on lots of FREE advice here! I'll tell you how to live your life if you let me!

About Susan Reimer
Susan Reimer has spent 16 years writing about raising kids - among other topics - in her column for The Baltimore Sun. And every time son Joseph or daughter Jessie passed another milestone - driver's license, college, wedding or a move to a new military duty station - she has planted another garden. Now she will be writing about those gardens - and yours - here on Garden Variety.

Susan isn't an expert gardener, but she wasn't an expert mother, either. Both - the kids and the gardens - seem to be doing well in spite of her.

She lives in Annapolis with her husband, Gary Mihoces, who loves to cut his grass but has noticed that there seems to be less of it every time the kids pass another milestone.
