Do you believe?

This week's column is on love at first sight. The biggest surprise that I had?

A lot of people are believers. It appears I'm a jaded, cynical, love-hater, because most of the people I talked to either said they believed in love at first sight or had experienced it first hand. Perhaps I'm too practical -- I believe in lust at first sight. I believe in infatuation at first sight. But love? That's a long-term thing.

Michael Sunnafrank, a communications professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and Adele Testani, co-founder of HurryDate, agree with me. But we're outnumbered by sentimental softies, it appears. It's hard not to be swayed by their stories -- one man says he fell in love with his wife when he was 7 -- but I'm inclined to believe it's more revisionist history than instant love.

What do you think?

Love at first sight - no way!!!!!!

Lust, yes! Love, no!

I really like the idea or the notion of it - but Love is deeper. There is nothing deep about "love at first sight" - there is something romantic about the notion though.

Love at first sight, ha! I mean its nice ideally but I don't believe that its very practically. You just can not equate how attractive a person is and love at the first instance you meet a person. It just does'nt make sense. For example, I think its more likely that you would hear a person say, "Wow, she's/he's hot. I would love to sleep with her/him" vs. "Wow, she's/he's hot. It would be oh so nice to fall in love with her/him"

Honestly, I don't believe in love at first sight, but it does give hope. I love the notion of someone seeing me and thinking, "Man, that's the woman of my dreams!" Is it likely though, probably not. But one can continue to dream to keep about the "old cat lady" realities.

Love at first sight? No way. The causes for loving someone are not evident by sight alone.

Love at first Chipotle Burrito? Yes.
