Fall activities for kids

apple%20cake%20basket.jpg
In honor of fall's official arrival, I''m working on putting together a list of 10 ways to enjoy autumn with your children in Central Maryland.

It's my favorite season; I can't wait to go apple picking. What else should be on the list?

Here's how to make that apple cake on the left, which I sampled for a story last year. It's easy to do with kids. Be aware that it doesn't rise much -- it's more like a crunchy breakfast cake.

Flip-Over Apple Cake
Serves 8 to 10

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus more for the pan
4 medium apples
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 cup, plus 1 tablespoon sugar (divided use)
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped walnuts
mint sprigs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease the bottom and sides of a 9-inch round cake pan with butter and set aside.

Melt 1/2 cup butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

Peel, core and cut the apples into 1/4-inch slices. Place the apples in a bowl and toss to coat with cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Place apple slices in overlapping concentric circles on the bottom of the prepared pan. Make a second layer if necessary.

Sift the remaining 1 cup of sugar and the flour in a large mixing bowl. Whisk in the egg and melted butter just until combined (do not overmix). Fold in the walnuts and continue to mix until smooth. Pour batter evenly over fruit, and smooth top with a rubber spatula.

Place on the center rack of the oven and bake until the cake is golden brown and a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40 to 45 minutes. Remove cake from oven and place on a wire rack to cool, about 15 minutes. When the pan is cool enough to handle, run a knife around the edge and invert the cake onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature, plain or with a favorite topping, such as whipped cream, ice cream or yogurt. Garnish with mint sprigs.

Per slice (based on 10 slices): 284 calories, 7 grams protein, 21 grams fat, 7 grams saturated fat, 21 grams carbohydrate, 3 grams fiber, 45 milligrams cholesterol, 9 milligrams sodium

Honfest, Greek Festival, and more family fun this weekend

HonfestIt's a great festival weekend -- which is good, since kids fresh out of school, as they will be in several local districts, will be eager for fun. In the city you've got your Honfest and St. Nicholas Greek Folk Festival; in Howard County, the Columbia Festival of the Arts has lots to offer for children.

Here's some of what's on for families, courtesy of intern Kayla Cross:

Other kid-friendly events include hands-on art activities lead by KidzArt, a Howard County organization. Children ages 5 and up, with parents, can make CD suncatchers, watercolor paintings, clay turtles, festival masks and even a "masterpiece in a box" for Father’s Day. The art activities are from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The White House Easter Egg Roll -- if you can't roll, you can watch

White House Easter Egg rollI know lots of you couldn't get tickets under the new online system for admission to the White House Easter egg roll taking place today. But if it's any consolation, you can see how it's unfolding online here.

The live stream of activities makes it look like things are proceedingin a pretty orderly fashion, but of course you can't see everything from this cam. From the schedule, it appears there will be musical acts and cooking demos for kids going on until nearly 5 p.m.

If you attended the event, we'd love to know how it went for you, and whether it was worth that frenzied online hunt for tickets. Twitter follower TaupeCat is there and tweeting the event live.

Fun with the family this weekend

You may have noticed that posting has been rather light this week, and that's because I've been on vacation. So today's events-for-the-weekend post will not be as robust as it is normally.

Fortunately, our web mavens have pulled together an excellent list of Easter activities that should tell you anything you want to know about fun with bunnies and eggs. If you're looking for something else, go to our Entertainment page and use the searchable events database along the right rail.

On Sunday and every second Sunday of the month through November, you can ride miniature trains 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Leakin Park, courtesy of the Chesapeake and Allegheny Steam Society, weather permitting.

Spring break activities, the early edition

Some schools in the area are on break this week -- and, given the state of the economy, you may be looking for things to do at home instead of traveling.

Here are a few ideas for school-aged kids. If you've got more, please add them:

--Tweens and teens 11-17 can learn scrapbooking at the Woodlawn library, at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17. Registration required; call 410-887-1336.

--Also Tuesday, visitors to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum get $1 off admission if they're wearing green.

--Are your kids into the interactive video game Dance Dance Revolution? They can dance it out with others at the Miller branch of the Howard County Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19. Registration, which can be done here, is required.

--Through March 31, kids' tickets are 2-for-1 to visit the Top of the World Observation Level at the World Trade Center at the Inner Harbor. Adults bringing kids get $1 off admission. The observation level is open Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Through this Sunday, there's a Black History exhibit on display. 410.837.VIEW (8439).

Pi day activities

Pi DayAs you may have read yesterday in my weekend activities post, tomorrow (March 14) is Pi Day, a celebration of pi (3.14), the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Besides going to the pi fest at the Maryland Science Center to see what they have in store, here are some other fun (and, sh!, educational) things you can do with children to celebrate:

--Your kids may not know that 3.14 is just the rounded version of pi, which actually has endless digits beyond its decimal point. You can find 10,000 of them, along with other fun pi facts, at The Joy of Pi. Then convert the digits into a musical sequence here.

--Learn about pi's history here.

--This site from Scholastic offers activities geared to different age groups, including fun with balls and hoops for the younger set and pie chart ideas for older kids.

--Pi Day is also Albert Einstein's birthday. Kids can learn about him here.

--Make Irish salmon pie for dinner. Here's the recipe from an Emeril Lagasse kids' cookbook we tried last year. Or make pie for dessert. And, hey, if you don't want to cook, pizza makes the pi-pie tie-in beautifully.

Seuss and snow

Cat in the Hat

It's Dr. Seuss's birthday. (You know it's a big deal when Google designs its logo on a Seuss theme.) Since you may be home with kids on this very snowy day, here are a few quick ideas for things to do:

--Here's a recipe for "Green Eggs and Ham." Looks fun, though I haven't tried it. My past attempts at Green Eggs and Ham have been met with scorn and derision.

--Visit the Seussville playground.

--Find activities themed to your favorite Seuss books here.

--Take quizzes to test your knowledge of Seuss stories here.

Now I know not everybody loves Dr. Seuss books; my father has confessed he dreaded reading them with us as kids. What's your opinion?

D.C. area day tripping

Goddard Space Flight CenterSister blogger Jessica McFadden, also known as A Parent in Silver Spring, recently wrote an essay for the Washington Post about taking kids to the Goddard Space Flight Visitors' Center. It's reprinted on her blog, along with links to other essays by parents about family-friendly indoor-play destinations in and around Washington.

If you're headed that way -- and cherry blossom season isn't far off -- you might give these destinations a try, and report back on how you liked them. Meanwhile, any other ideas?

Welcoming 2009 with your kids

Here are three ways to celebrate the New Year with your kids this Wednesday, if you're not into keeping them up until midnight to watch the downtown fireworks.

There's always noon instead of midnight:Noontime New Year

--The Maryland Science Center hosts its first "Midnight Noon" celebration from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. with live music, games and activities, including performances by the kids' band Milkshake and Blue Sky Puppet Theater. There will be a "ball drop" at noon. Free with science center admission.

--Port Discovery also will ring in the new year at noon with an Italian-themed celebration featuring Maryland Public Television's Bob the Vid Tech, confetti and a toast of milk and cookies. Activities, which will run from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., will include crafts, performances and even pasta-making. Free with museum admission.

--A bit later, Annapolis keeps it family-friendly with kids' activities starting at 3 p.m. at the city's recreation center and fireworks at 7:30 p.m. (with more later, too.) $15 if you're buying them now; kids under 5 free.

More ideas? Post a comment.

Things to do this week

Olde Tyme Christmas, Fells Point

Major holiday happenings this week/end. It will be hard to choose which to embrace and which to pass up.

And it's also the prime weekend to get your tree and put it up, if you do a tree, so there's that to fit in.

If you're in a going-out mood, here are the highlights, including the Mount Vernon tree lighting, mayor's Christmas parade, and Olde Tyme Christmas in Fells Point:

Things to do this week -- Thanksgiving weekend

34th Street

Happy Thanksgiving!

What will you be doing this weekend, if not shopping? For one thing, the famous 34th Street lights go on at 5:45 p.m. Saturday in Hampden.

Other things to do, with help from interns Lindsey Citron and Raven Smith:

Thursday, Nov. 27:

Hopefully you'll be , watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and playing Monopoly with the kids while the turkey roasts perfectly and the pies bake themselves.

Failing that, send the kids to the movies with somebody who doesn't have to cook. Or, for other ideas, see our story today on fun ways to enjoy your holiday weekend. If the weather's nice, we like to have the non-cooks rake leaves for the kids to jump in while my husband prepares the turkey on the Weber. (And I have the kitchen to myself for everything else.)

If you're really ambitious, there are Thanksgiving morning 2K or 5K Turkey Trots sponsored by the YMCA of Central Maryland. Towson: Starting Place: YMCA of Central Maryland, Towson, 600 W. Chesapeake Ave, Towson. Ending: YMCA of Central Maryland, Chesapeake Ave. entrance.Registration is at 7 a.m., Race kicks off at 9 a.m., Entry fee is $25 for online registration, $30 per mailed or in person entries, $35 race-day entries. Child Watch is from 8:30-10 a.m. Free for members; $5 per non-member child, $8 per non-member families. Bel Air: Starting Place: YMCA of Central Maryland, Bel Air, Ward Family Center, 314 W. Williams Street, Bel Air. Ending Place:YMCA of Central Maryland, Bel Air, Ward Family Center, 314 W. Williams Street, Bel Air. 8:30 a.m., $20 per person for 5K run, $15 per person for 5K walk.

Friday, Nov. 28:

Turkey Skate: As Jill Rosen reports today in our You & Your Weekend section: Dominic "Mimi" DiPietro Family Skating Center, 200 S. Linwood Ave., is hosting Turkey Skate from noon-2 p.m. Entry is $3; skate rental is $2 (410-396-9392).

And there's more...

Baltimore Thanksgiving ParadeIt's not quite Thanksgiving yet, but Baltimore's Thanksgiving parade is this weekend, along Pratt Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. (I love the image of the cheery-yet-creepy giant gingerbread man taking over downtown from the 2006 parade, at left.) Afterwards, you'll be able to visit Santa at Harborplace.

It's also a big weekend for local holiday bazaars and more Santa visits. (If you know of some we haven't listed, please chime in with details, prices, and links in the comments section.)

A reunion for GBMC mother's group moms

A reader named Cathryn Lee is putting together a reunion to be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 26 for mothers who have been part of the mom-baby groups at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where Dee Dee Franke has such a following.

Here are some of the details:

"Hey ladies/babies/toddlers/husbands from GBMC and/or the Tuesday/Friday groups.... Let's get together & see each other. The Charcoal Deli ("my beef shack") will be cooking up pit beef, turkey and hot dogs and serving fruit salad and pasta salad (trying to stay away from anything with major allergy problems) & non-alcoholic beverages. This will also be an opportunity to honor Dee Dee, our baby whisperer. We (as in all of us) will be presenting her with a yearbook (details below).

"The cost will be $25.00 per couple (or $12.50 if you're flying solo), which can be paid the day of the party. This event is not restricted to 2007/2008 mom's group attendees, so if you know anyone from the old school, please pass this along. Hoping this will be a great way for all to catch up.

"Oregon Ridge has a nice playground and room to roam. We will be outside. Might be a little chilly, so bring a layer. If anyone wants to add a few decorations/desserts/activities/favors or whatever, please let me know (cmcl27@verizon.net). Any help is appreciated. We really want to make this a great day for all of us and for Dee Dee, who is such a treasure.

"Please RSVP by October 18th and please mail your yearbook pages by then too, so I will have some time to put it together. Thanks everyone!!"

If you'd like to respond or get details on the yearbook project...

Picking pumpkins for next Thursday

pumpkinsIt's getting to be time to pick your pumpkin. If your preschool or school doesn't have a field trip scheduled, perhaps you're going on your own this weekend or next. But which pumpkin patch is best to visit?

I thought local pumpkin farms would be a good subject for next Thursday's tip sheet. As usual, the tips depend on you. Even more so this time than usual, because my heretofore favorite destination, the charming Belvedere Farm in Fallston, is not holding fall activities this year.

To start the discussion, here's our list of local pumpkin farms. Which is your favorite? Are there others you'd recommend?

Things to do with the family this week

Dragon boat racesThis weekend we hit a September sweet spot, when farm activities and a fair for the Jewish holidays coexist with still-summery activities such as the dragon boat races in the Inner Harbor. You can get half off a child's admission (with another child's full admission) through Oct. 29 by printing this coupon.

Things to do with the family this weekend

The Maryland Science Center kicks off its Egg Drop, Price Drop Saturdays this weekend through Dec. 27. If you come before 11:30 a.m., you'll get an egg to drop from the atrium. Your challenge is to keep it from breaking by wrapping it in a host of available materials. (You'll also get $5 off admission.)

We've always had a good time taking part in this activity...until, despite our best cushioning efforts, our carefully packaged eggs go splat on the ground. Help out your fellow parents and share your secrets for getting the eggs to land safely. What packing material do you use?

Meanwhile, here are a few more events to consider over the next few days:

Thursday, Sept. 4:

--Remember the Titanic: Kids 6-12 can learn about the Titanic from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the Herring Run Branch of the Enoch Pratt Library. Free.

And more...

PeachesAh, Labor Day weekend. Will you stay or go? If you stay, there are a few more days of the Maryland State Fair at the Timonium Fairgrounds to enjoy, along with the Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville. Or check out these family ideas:

--Our new You & Your Weekend section has a great story on how to take advantage of the last days of summer. Slurp a snow ball, run through the sprinkler with the kids, catch an outdoor movie in Little Italy.

--It's the last weekend to catch Body Worlds, which closes Monday, at the Maryland Science Center.

On Saturday (Aug. 30), you can learn to preserve some of that great summer fruit:

What are you doing with the family this weekend?

Instead of an events listing this week, my on-vacation solution is to pose the question and hope that you will respond with creative activities that nobody else has thought of. The stakes are high, with some schools starting Monday and summer all but over.

If you run a venue and would like to advertise an event for this weekend, please post dates, times and prices below.

Sadly, I must also report that the tireless Jennifer Choi, who compiled our family-friendly events list each week, is no longer with The Sun. If you have an event to list for the weeks to come, please send it to me. Photos are great, too.

Hang with the monkeys at the Maryland Zoo

In addition to our short list of fun things to do from yesterday, this is also the Maryland Zoo's first annual Primate Awareness Weekend. Today through Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors to the Chimpanzee Forest can participate in special kids' activities and meet with keepers and volunteers who work with the primates.

According to a press release, some of the raffle prizes will be paintings done by the primates themselves. Sounds interesting.

Most activities are free with admission to the zoo.

Things to do this week

Harry PotterCan you believe it's been ten years since the first Harry Potter book was published? I mean, in a way, that it's only been ten years. It seems like the series has been an integral part of childhood reading for longer than that.

And there's more going on:

Two more events for the weekend

I've been alerted to two more fun activities you might want to know about for this weekend. (If you missed it, here's our weekly list of things to do from yesterday.)

Tomorrow, there will be a free Negro League Fan Fest, sponsored by the Black Athletes and Lost Legends Association, from noon to 7 p.m. at East Baltimore Development Inc., 1731 E. Chase St. in East Baltimore. Former Negro League players will be on hand to sign autographs and meet fans. A parade will kick off the event. For information, call 410-866-4815.

And, a reader e-mailed about a fire service parade at 9 a.m. Sunday in connection with the Firehouse Expo downtown. According to the web site, about 140 pieces of new and antique fire equipment will be on display along Key Highway and Light Street on its way to a reviewing stand behind the Hyatt Hotel on Charles Street, next to the Baltimore Convention Center.
