DIY Halloween costume contest

(The Baltimore Sun)

I was never big on Halloween, even as a kid. But now that I have a child, I'm so excited about celebrating the day with baby J. and E.

I found some fun and reasonably-priced options at several mass retailers. But I'm betting there are some crafty parents out there who have put together costumes for less than $15.

So here's an idea. Let's have a children's costume contest.

If you have an unique idea for a do-it-yourself children's costume, send them here.

The rules are simple: The costume has to be made for less than $15. The cheaper the better, of course. Creativity is also a plus. Send a picture to hcho@baltsun.com and I will post photos in a future post.

My colleagues and I will pick the top three ideas, and we'll have readers pick a winner. Submit your ideas by commenting. Deadline is Oct. 29.

This could be really fun or be a disaster. Let see how this goes ...

In the meantime, Consuming Interests has some cheap costume ideas. Also check out baltimoresun.com's Halloween guide.

I loved this idea that my daughter came up with this year. She got Mickey ears at disney this summer. She had an idea to use the mickey ears in her costume. She got a box at home depot for a little over a dollar. She painted it like a popcorn container and we made popcorn and glued it onto the top of the box. we got the mickey hands on clearance for under 3 dollars.

Our two year old son told us that he wanted to be a monster truck driver, so rather than re-creating a known monster truck driver (like Grave Digger), my husband & I came up with our own...Steeler Stomper. We're huge Raven's fans so it seemed perfect. First we measured our son's wagon since the truck would fit around that. Then my husband cut out pieces of cardboard from boxes and traced out each side for the truck. Once all the pieces were cut out, he put the pieces together and then painted the cardboard with spray paint. Then he created a "roll cage" out of PCV pipe and painted those purple. I worked on printing out pictures of Raven players, and some pictures from some games, some Raven logos & of course some "sponsors" for the truck. Then cut & glued the sponsor on the truck.
I would say that we spent less than $20 on the supplies (all of the carboard & paint we had on hand). It did take a lot of work to create and design, but it was a huge hit at the campground this past weekend. GO RAVENS!!!!
